Toyota Launches Yaris Cross Nightshade Edition

Toyota’s compact SUV family has evolved into an interesting split, with two different Yaris Cross versions designed to appeal to separate regions of the world. Both belong to the subcompact crossover segment, but the variant sold in Southeast Asia has taken on a more dramatic and expressive character with the launch of the Nightshade edition in Thailand. This new version introduces a partially enclosed grille, darker exterior styling elements, and a long list of standard equipment that elevates its premium feel.

Unlike the global Yaris Cross—which is built on Toyota’s TNGA-B platform—the Southeast Asian model is underpinned by the DNGA platform developed by Daihatsu. This foundation also allows it to be notably larger than the European version, gaining an extra 130 mm in length for a total measurement of 4,310 mm from front to rear. First revealed in Indonesia in 2023, this regional Yaris Cross features sharp LED headlights, a wide-mouth grille, and deep lower bumper intakes, giving it a bold stance reminiscent of a shrunken pre-facelift Toyota Highlander. The newly introduced Nightshade edition builds on this with a unique design feature called the “Metro Stylish” grille, which places a body-colored panel behind the Toyota emblem and incorporates a revised lower pattern. The result is a crisper, more refined front-end appearance that could be mistaken for a subtle mid-cycle facelift.

The exterior enhancements continue with 18-inch alloy wheels finished in gloss black, along with a variety of matching darkened accents placed strategically around the vehicle. The shiny black treatment extends to the lower body cladding, the front intake surrounds, skid plates, window trim, side mirrors, rear spoiler, and even sections of the tailgate. Combined, these elements create a consistent shadow-themed aesthetic that defines the Nightshade edition. Paint choices are intentionally limited to two options—Cement Gray Metallic and Platinum White Pearl—both paired with a contrasting black roof to reinforce its distinctive two-tone look.

Inside, the cabin continues the dark motif. The seats are wrapped in synthetic leather, and additional touchpoints—including the door cards, steering wheel, center console, and gear selector—receive real leather trimmings, enhancing the interior’s perceived quality. Built on the fully loaded variant of the Southeast Asian Yaris Cross, the Nightshade comes generously equipped. Notable features include a fixed panoramic sunroof, a wireless device charger, a sizeable 10.1-inch central infotainment screen, an electrically operated tailgate, and the Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver-assistance technologies.

For Thailand, Toyota offers the Nightshade exclusively with a self-charging hybrid powertrain. The system combines a 1.5-liter Dual VVT-i gasoline engine with an electric motor to produce a total of 110 horsepower. Power is directed to the front wheels via an E-CVT transmission. There are no mechanical or suspension upgrades specific to the Nightshade edition, as it shares its hybrid setup with the rest of the model range.

In terms of pricing, the Nightshade sits at the top of the Thai Yaris Cross lineup, starting at approximately $28,800. Other trim levels are priced between $24,700 and $28,100, making the Nightshade the most expensive—and arguably the most visually striking—option available to buyers seeking a stylish and well-equipped compact SUV.
