Ram Charger Delayed But Evolving for Excellence

It has now been over two years since Ram first introduced the 1500 REV electric pickup truck, which was originally slated to arrive at dealerships in the United States by the end of 2024. However, Stellantis, the parent company, has delayed the launch multiple times, pushing the release into 2025. Alongside the 1500 REV, Ram’s range-extended V-6 model, called the Ramcharger, was unveiled roughly eighteen months ago and was also expected to hit the market by late 2024. Unfortunately, that schedule was also pushed back, with the Ramcharger’s release postponed to 2025 as well. Now, both models face yet another delay.

According to the latest update from Stellantis, the Ramcharger will not be available to consumers until the first quarter of 2026. The company stated this additional delay is necessary to allow for an extended quality validation phase to ensure all issues are fully resolved before production ramps up. As if this delay wasn’t disappointing enough for fans eagerly awaiting the electric trucks, the Ram 1500 REV has been pushed even further back, with a new expected on-sale date set for the summer of 2027. When it finally does arrive, it will be considered a 2028 model year vehicle in the U.S. market.

Stellantis spokeswoman Jodi Tinson provided some insight into the reasons behind the most recent delay for the 1500 REV in an email to Crain’s Detroit Business. She mentioned that the company is responding to "slowing consumer demand for half-ton battery electric vehicle pickups," which has influenced their decision to delay the launch. Initially, the electric 1500 REV was intended to come to market before the Ramcharger, but last year, Stellantis reversed this rollout sequence.

By the time the 1500 REV reaches customers, over four years will have passed since its initial debut back in February 2023. Meanwhile, the Ramcharger, which was introduced in November 2023, is now projected to launch in early 2026, about two years after it was first shown. This timeline assumes no further delays occur.

Both trucks will be manufactured at Stellantis’s Sterling Heights Assembly Plant, where the company is investing approximately \$235.5 million to retrofit and prepare the facility for electric vehicle production. This will mark Stellantis’s first factory in the United States to assemble a fully electric vehicle. For comparison, the Dodge Charger Daytona is produced in Brampton, Ontario; the Jeep Wagoneer S is assembled in Toluca, Mexico; and the Fiat 500e, which has experienced slow sales, is imported from Turin, Italy.

In summary, while Ram’s electric truck ambitions are clear, the repeated delays reflect the challenges automakers face as they transition toward electric vehicles in a market that is still developing. Customers will need to remain patient as Stellantis works to ensure these new trucks meet quality standards and market demands.
