Toyota is updating the GR86 for the 2025 model year in Japan, focusing on enhancing its handling to appeal to driving enthusiasts. Drawing inspiration from its performance on the racetrack, Toyota aims to give the car an even more distinctive driving experience.
The enhancements are centered on improving the car's handling and its connection with the road. Toyota has fine-tuned the shock absorbers and electric power steering to make the car more responsive, ensuring a better grip on the road. Additionally, a new Hakone Special Edition trim is being introduced. This edition features a green exterior, 18-inch bronze wheels, Brembo brakes, and Sachs shock absorbers. Inside, it has unique black and tan upholstery. Only 850 units of this special edition will be available when it goes on sale in the fall, with pricing to be announced later in the year. In terms of new features, the 2025 GR86 in Japan will include a tire pressure warning system and daytime running lights.
Toyota is also offering a limited edition called the "RZ Ridge Green Limited," with only 200 units being produced. This edition features a striking green paint, 18-inch bronze wheels with 215/40R18 performance tires, and an upgraded interior with stylish embroidery and two-tone black sport seats accented with tan in a mix of suede and leather.
Under the hood, the car continues to be powered by a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, producing 228 horsepower and 249 Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Both versions come with a Torsen limited-slip differential. The automatic models also feature a new Sport mode for better shifting, while the manual versions include a Track mode for a sharper driving experience.
Although these upgrades are currently announced for the Japanese market, it is expected that the chassis improvements will be applied to GR86 models worldwide in the coming months. However, the "Ridge Green Limited" edition is likely to remain exclusive to Japan.
The standard GR86 in Japan starts at $20,100 for the manual version and $20,700 for the automatic. The "Ridge Green Limited" edition comes with a higher price tag, starting at around $24,500 for the manual and $25,100 for the automatic.
Toyota's updates to the GR86 for the 2025 model year in Japan focus on enhancing the car's handling and road feel, introducing a new special edition trim, and adding a few new features to the lineup. These changes are designed to provide a more engaging driving experience for enthusiasts, with some elements likely to be implemented in other markets soon.
