The FJ Cruiser started being produced in 2006 and left the United States in 2014, however, it continued to be offered in other markets for many years after that. Toyota introduced the FJ Cruiser Final Edition in the Middle East, indicating that the off-roader may soon be officially retired.
According to a source from Cars.co.za, a Toyota South Africa official was able to confirm that the FJ Cruiser vehicle line would be discontinued globally as of December 2022, adding that the termination did not just apply to the South African market.
The FJ Cruiser continued to be sold in other parts of the world after it was discontinued from the US market in late 2017. Toyota introduced the FJ Cruiser Final Edition for the vehicle's final model year, and it was identical to the one that was offered in the US and Japan in 2017. The remaining 1,000 SUVs received single-tone beige exterior and interior trimmings, many exterior features that were blacked out, and an exclusive numbered badge to emphasize their exclusivity, it was reported in early October of last year.
Before it was discontinued, there was just one engine option for the FJ Cruiser. That was the legendary 4.0-liter V6 gasoline engine from Toyota, with 270 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission distributed that power to all four wheels so that it could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in around 7.6 seconds. Standard options included Active Traction Control, Crawl Control, VSC, and an electronically controlled locking rear differential.
