New MG4 EV Combines Minimalist Design with Advanced Connectivity

SAIC Motor has unveiled the interior details of the upcoming MG4 EV ahead of its official launch in China scheduled for August 5. This update marks a significant evolution in the vehicle’s cabin design, focusing on modern aesthetics, advanced technology, and enhanced passenger comfort. Central to the redesign is a completely revamped dashboard, an intelligent infotainment system developed in partnership with tech giant Oppo, and reengineered seats aimed at improving overall ergonomics.

The new dashboard prominently features a 15.6-inch floating central touchscreen, replacing the previous model’s integrated display setup. This larger screen serves as the main interface for the vehicle’s controls, drastically reducing the number of physical buttons to just five essential ones located beneath the display. The air vents have been cleverly concealed within the dashboard itself, contributing to a clean and minimalist interior that emphasizes simplicity and elegance.

One of the highlights is the all-new infotainment system—MG’s first collaborative effort with Oppo. Powered by the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, this system offers advanced functionalities such as cross-platform connectivity and the ability to control various vehicle features through a linked smartphone. Gesture-based navigation enhances ease of use, while AI-driven interaction personalizes the experience. Furthermore, the system supports app mirroring and wireless connections with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing seamless integration with users’ mobile devices. The centre console also houses a 50-watt wireless charging pad equipped with active ventilation to keep devices cool during charging.

The interior colour palette introduces two sophisticated schemes inspired by Morandi art: Rose Purple and Mountain Blue. These muted, low-saturation hues are paired with soft-touch materials as part of MG’s “Swan Wing” design philosophy, which focuses on simplified structural elements combined with tactile, premium finishes for a serene and inviting cabin atmosphere.

Front seats have been redesigned for improved comfort and support. Each seat features an extended cushion measuring 503 millimeters, along with both ventilation and heating functions. The driver’s footwell is optimized with a 46.4-degree flat pedal angle, reducing leg fatigue during long drives. The seatbacks have transitioned to a one-piece design, offering enhanced lumbar support and durability.

For rear passengers, MG has increased the seat cushion length to 522 millimeters and designed the backrest with a 27-degree recline angle to maximize comfort. The cabin floor is entirely flat, creating more legroom and a spacious feel, while a 60/40 split-folding rear seatback allows for flexible cargo configurations. Higher trims also offer a panoramic sunroof complete with an integrated sunshade, adding a touch of luxury and openness.

Built on SAIC’s Nebula EV platform, the MG4 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm—an increase of 45 mm over the previous generation. These dimensional changes support the enhanced interior space and contribute to a more comfortable ride.

Competing in China’s compact electric vehicle segment alongside rivals like the Volkswagen ID.3, the MG4 EV’s interior upgrade is part of a comprehensive mid-cycle refresh that also updates the vehicle’s exterior styling and drivetrain. Deliveries of the refreshed model are expected to begin in September, shortly after its official launch.
