While the exterior of this year's VW ID.4 may not showcase drastic changes compared to its predecessor, significant improvements beneath the surface promise a more enticing experience for potential buyers. The 2024 iteration boasts enhancements in power output and interior features, elevating its appeal in the competitive electric vehicle market.
Initially introduced in Europe last fall, the upgraded ID.4 has now made its way to North America, with vehicles manufactured in Chattanooga, TN, embracing the same enhancements. A notable enhancement lies in the substantial power increase for single-motor variants, elevating from 201 hp to an impressive 282 hp. This enhancement brings the base model's power output closer to that of the previous bi-motor, AWD ID.4, which has also received a boost to 335 hp. With the base model now offering considerable power, the necessity for a second motor might be questioned.
Buyers continue to have the option between 62 kWh or 82 kWh battery packs, with the latter offering the power upgrade. Additionally, vehicles equipped with the larger battery pack benefit from the ID.4's new infotainment display, featuring a spacious 12.9-inch screen with backlit temperature sliders, enhanced climate control interface, and improved menu layout. Unfortunately, models with the base battery pack retain last year's criticized 12-inch infotainment system.
All ID.4 buyers are eligible for the U.S. government's $7,500 tax credit allowance. While initially omitted from the approved vehicle list, VW's demonstration that both the 2023 and 2024 models utilize batteries from South Korea, complying with sourcing regulations, secured eligibility for the tax credit. Furthermore, eligible customers can apply the tax credit as a down payment by transferring it to a dealer.
The VW ID.4 lineup comprises base, S, and S Plus trims, with the entry-level 62 kWh model starting at $39,735 plus $1,425 destination fee and offering a range of 332 km. The most affordable single-motor 82 kWh version is priced at $44,875, providing a commendable driving range of 468 km. S models equipped with the larger battery pack feature ventilated front seats, while S Plus variants boast a premium Harmon Kardon sound system and stylish 21-inch machine-finish wheels.
