Mazda Arata EV Concept Revealed At Beijing Auto Show

Author: |

Mazda took the wraps off the Arata EV Concept at this year's Beijing Auto Show, sharing the stage with the production-ready iteration of the new rear-wheel drive EZ-6 sedan. While the SUV is not as advanced in its development as the 6 sedan, it's firmly set on a path towards production. Mazda confirms plans to launch the finalized EV in China next year, boasting a fully electric powertrain. However, details regarding potential hybrid options or availability in Western markets remain unconfirmed.

Described by Mazda as embodying a design theme of "soulful + futuristic x modern," the Arata EV Concept stands out with its robust and purposeful stance, highlighted by its chunky doors that reduce the window area. Its visual presence and character are emphasized, positioning it distinctively against competitors like the Tesla Model Y.

The design incorporates functional elements such as a recessed hood, allowing airflow through the grille akin to Dodge's electric Charger Daytona. Mazda also mentions the presence of "air tunnels" in the front fenders and rear pillars, presumably for aerodynamic optimization. Notably, the illuminated red lettering at the rear, spelling out the brand name, hints at potential showroom-ready details. However, Mazda has not shared any images of the concept's interior or provided details regarding its drivetrain.

Regrettably, the Arata seems destined solely for the Chinese market, as Mazda has explicitly stated. Collaborating with China's Changan Automobile, Mazda has developed the EZ-6 and a series of forthcoming EVs, including presumably the production version of the Arata. Changan already offers the Shenlan S7, a similarly sized SUV available with electric and range-extender hybrid powertrains. Therefore, it's logical to speculate that Mazda has leveraged this existing platform for its electric SUV endeavor.
