Great Wall Motor (GWM) has officially introduced the Haval Big Dog Plus, a refreshed version of its popular SUV line, now available in both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) options. The model is being offered in five different trims, with prices ranging from 135,800 to 183,800 yuan, which is around approximately $19,100 to $25,800. The Big Dog Plus is essentially an upgraded variant of the current second-generation Big Dog, bringing revised styling elements, advanced features, and multiple powertrain choices while maintaining the rugged, practical image that Haval SUVs are known for.
On the outside, the vehicle has been given a more modernized appearance. At the front, a newly designed semi-closed grille dominates the fascia, housing a larger illuminated “HAVAL” logo that adds a distinctive touch. The signature round headlights, which have become a recognizable feature of the Big Dog series, are still present on each side of the grille. Moving to the rear, GWM has swapped the traditional “HAVAL” badging with a prominent “GWM” emblem. From the side view, riveted decorations have been added to the wheel arches, enhancing its robust and adventurous appeal. Despite these updates, the vehicle’s dimensions remain unchanged, measuring 4705 mm in length, 1908 mm in width, and 1780 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2810 mm. The SUV also maintains an approach angle of 24 degrees, a departure angle of 30 degrees, and a maximum wading depth of 560 mm, making it suitable for light off-road use. Buyers can choose from five exterior paint colors to personalize their vehicle.
Inside the cabin, the overall layout continues from the standard model but with refinements to improve comfort and usability. A newly designed two-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel has been introduced, accompanied by a 12.3-inch full LCD digital instrument cluster and a large 14.6-inch central touchscreen. Physical buttons remain beneath the central display, ensuring a balance between modern digital controls and traditional tactile usability. The SUV now runs on GWM’s latest Coffee OS 3.0 system, which, according to the company, has improved responsiveness, with voice commands being processed in just 250 milliseconds. The interior also offers generous practicality, with 38 different storage compartments scattered throughout the cabin, six airbags for safety, and a versatile trunk that ranges from 474 liters to 1,362 liters when the rear seats are folded down.
Under the hood, customers can select from multiple powertrain configurations. The ICE version is offered with either a 1.5T or a 2.0T turbocharged engine. The 1.5T unit delivers 181 horsepower and 275 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The more powerful 2.0T engine produces 235 horsepower and 385 Nm, combined with a 9-speed DCT. Depending on the engine, fuel consumption under WLTC conditions ranges between 7.64 and 8.58 liters per 100 km.
The PHEV variant integrates a 1.5T engine with dual electric motors, connected to a 2-speed DHT transmission. The gasoline engine itself generates 154 hp and 243 Nm, while the front and rear electric motors add 94 hp/160 Nm and 201 hp/350 Nm, respectively, offering strong hybrid performance. Buyers can also choose between two lithium iron phosphate battery packs: 18.74 kWh and 27.54 kWh. These provide pure electric driving ranges of 105 km and 150 km . Power efficiency is another highlight, with WLTC combined fuel consumption rated at only 1.65L and 1.13L per 100 km, depending on the battery selected.
Overall, the Haval Big Dog Plus brings fresh styling, upgraded technology, and diverse engine options, making it a well-rounded SUV for urban commuters and adventurous drivers alike.
