Xiaomi, the Chinese technology giant, has made a bold entry into the electric vehicle market with the launch of its first EV, the SU7 sedan. Available in three distinct versions, the SU7 caters to a wide range of consumer preferences and budgets, with prices starting from 215,900 yuan ($29,900 USD) for the base model and reaching up to 299,900 yuan ($41,500 USD) for the top-of-the-line variant.

The entry-level SU7 Standard boasts a 73.6 kWh battery pack, delivering an impressive range of 700 km on a single charge. Powered by a single motor rear-wheel-drive system with 220 kW of power, this model offers an affordable yet capable electric driving experience. For those seeking even greater performance and range, the SU7 Pro and SU7 Max variants are equipped with a larger 94.3 kWh battery, enabling an extended range of up to 830 km. These higher-end models feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that generates a remarkable 480 kW of power, promising exhilarating acceleration and handling.

Xiaomi's foray into the electric vehicle market has been met with overwhelming demand, as evidenced by the staggering 50,000 orders received within the first 27 minutes of order books opening. The SU7 has already hit 59 stores across 29 Chinese cities, and deliveries are scheduled to commence at the end of April.

Beyond its impressive performance and range capabilities, the SU7 sedan offers a host of innovative features that cater to the modern consumer's needs. These include a built-in refrigerator, smart storage solutions, a head-up display, and a cutting-edge Pilot Pro ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System). Additionally, the vehicle boasts a premium Dolby Atmos audio system, ensuring an immersive audio experience for passengers.

The SU7's design has garnered praise from industry experts, with former BMW designer Chris Bangle likening the vehicle's powerful performance to a "rocket horse." This endorsement further solidifies Xiaomi's commitment to delivering a compelling and dynamic driving experience with its inaugural electric vehicle offering.

As Xiaomi enters the highly competitive electric vehicle market, the SU7 sedan represents a significant milestone for the company, showcasing its ability to innovate and diversify beyond its traditional consumer electronics portfolio.

It's not unexpected that Xiaomi Auto enlisted the expertise of a BMW veteran, considering the involvement of Li Tianyuan, Xiaomi's Head of Design, in leading the SU7's design team. Tianyuan, who previously worked at BMW and played a key role in projects such as the BMW i Vision Circular concept, BMW iX, and the new 7 series, brings valuable experience to the table.

During the presentation, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun extended a warm welcome to competitors including William Li of Nio, He Xiaopeng of Xpeng, and Li Xiang of Li Auto, acknowledging their past contributions and guidance in navigating the challenges of electric vehicle (EV) development. Jun expressed gratitude for the valuable insights provided by these industry peers over the years.

Adding to the prestige of the event, former BMW Group Chief of Design Chris Bangle made an appearance on stage, commending the SU7. Recognized as one of the world's top ten most renowned car designers, Bangle's portfolio includes work on BMW, Mini, and Rolls Royce brands. Now serving as a consultant for Xiaomi Auto Design, his endorsement further validates the quality and innovation of the SU7.

Further enhancing the SU7's pedigree is exterior designer James Qiu, who brings his experience from Mercedes-Benz, where he contributed to the design of the Vision EQXX. Qiu's expertise adds another layer of excellence to the SU7's design, underscoring Xiaomi's commitment to delivering exceptional quality and innovation in their automotive endeavors.
