Toyota has issued a recall for approximately 42,000 Corolla Cross Hybrid models in the United States due to a software fault that could potentially affect braking performance. The issue lies with the brake actuator and the skid control ECU, which may not control brake fluid pressure as intended, particularly during cornering.
This fault can lead to a "hard brake pedal with reduced braking force," potentially increasing stopping distances. Toyota has confirmed that all affected vehicles have the faulty software and are at risk of developing this issue.
The recall involves 2023-2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid models manufactured between June 1, 2022, and September 10, 2024. Toyota dealerships were notified of the recall in early September, and owners will be contacted before November 19.
To address the problem, Toyota will update the skid control ECU software free of charge. Owners of affected vehicles are encouraged to schedule an appointment with their local Toyota dealer to have the necessary repairs performed.
This recall comes on the heels of another recent recall for Toyota's Grand Highlander and Lexus TX SUVs due to defective side-curtain shield airbags. These two models were temporarily halted from sale until a solution was found.
While Toyota has not disclosed whether any accidents or injuries have been linked to the braking issue in the Corolla Cross Hybrid, the recall serves as a reminder of the importance of vehicle safety and the ongoing efforts of automakers to identify and address potential defects.
