Toyota Issues Recall for Transmission Issue Affecting Hundreds of Thousands of Trucks and SUVs

In response to a transmission issue affecting late-model year trucks and SUVs, Toyota has initiated a recall encompassing more than a quarter of a million vehicles. The problem revolves around potential power transmission to the wheels when the vehicle is shifted into neutral, posing a safety hazard. Fortunately, Toyota asserts that a straightforward software update is anticipated to rectify the issue.

The affected vehicles span across various models, including the 2022-2024 Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid, the 2023-2024 Sequoia, and the 2022-2024 Lexus LX 600. These models are equipped with a 10-speed automatic gearbox manufactured by Aisin AW and may exhibit a flaw where the forward gear fails to disengage immediately upon shifting to neutral. In such instances, Toyota warns that the vehicle could inadvertently move forward at a low speed, heightening the risk of a potential collision.


Toyota emphasizes that this occurrence is expected only under specific conditions, notably on a flat surface with no brakes applied. However, to mitigate the risk and ensure customer safety, the automaker is initiating this recall to address the issue promptly. Dealerships will administer a software update to affected vehicles to alleviate the transmission concern.

Despite Toyota's proactive approach in announcing the recall before official documentation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), several aspects remain unclear. Details regarding whether the issue affects the entire recall population or only a subset, as well as the specific breakdown of affected models within the approximately 280,000 vehicles, have not been disclosed. Furthermore, Toyota has refrained from providing information regarding any injuries or damages resulting from the transmission problem.
