The BYD Atto 2 DM-i Could Redefine Small Plug-In Hybrids in Europe

BYD has revealed the first official information about the upcoming plug-in hybrid version of its new compact SUV, the Atto 2, marking another major step in the brand’s growing electrified vehicle lineup. Announced through BYD’s UK division, the new Atto 2 DM-i plug-in hybrid (PHEV) combines electric efficiency with long-distance touring capability. According to BYD, the model is expected to deliver an electric-only range of up to 90 kilometers and an impressive combined petrol-electric range of up to 1,020 kilometers on a single charge and tank. While full specifications have yet to be confirmed, BYD stated that the PHEV will be offered in two distinct variants, each equipped with different battery sizes and tuned for unique power and torque outputs, catering to a variety of driver preferences and needs.

The Atto 2 DM-i’s 90-kilometer electric range makes it a class leader in Europe, outperforming other compact plug-in hybrid SUVs in terms of electric-only capability. Although BYD has not yet shared all the mechanical details, it has released several design updates that differentiate the PHEV from the fully electric Atto 2 EV. The changes are subtle but noticeable, including a slightly larger front air intake, refined silver accents on the lower bumper, and new tailgate badging. The company has also removed the front guard vent garnishes to create a cleaner look. Interestingly, those side trim elements were already missing from the Atto 2 EV that BYD previewed in Australia earlier this year, suggesting that the two variants will share a very similar aesthetic overall.

Further information about the Atto 2’s performance, interior, and technology features is expected to be announced later in the year. BYD plans to begin preview drives across Europe soon, giving potential customers their first hands-on experience. When it reaches UK showrooms, the Atto 2 DM-i will stand out as the only plug-in hybrid in its class, since there are currently no direct competitors in the small SUV PHEV category.

BYD Atto 2

If BYD decides to introduce the Atto 2 DM-i to Australia, the situation will be similar. The country’s small SUV market currently includes hybrid models like the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Nissan Qashqai, and Toyota Corolla Cross, but all of them rely on non-plug-in hybrid systems. Meanwhile, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV, once the only plug-in option, has now been discontinued, with only limited stock remaining at dealerships.

In Europe and Australia, plug-in hybrid power is currently reserved for premium compact SUVs such as the Alfa Romeo Tonale, Cupra Formentor, and Mercedes-Benz GLA. However, BYD’s Atto 2 DM-i is not expected to compete in that luxury segment. Instead, it aims to deliver plug-in hybrid technology at a more accessible price point. Although official Australian pricing for the Atto 2 EV has yet to be announced, BYD has hinted at a target range in the low-to-mid $30,000s. Should the PHEV variant arrive, it would likely follow the pricing strategy of the BYD Sealion 6 PHEV, positioned below the all-electric Sealion 7 EV, offering customers a balance between affordability, efficiency, and innovation.
