Mercedes EQB Retires as New EV Era Begins

The fully electric version of Mercedes-Benz’s GLB-Class, known as the EQB, is nearing the end of its journey much sooner than many expected. Despite its modern styling and premium badge, the EQB was built on the older MFA platform, a chassis first introduced in 2011. While this platform served Mercedes well for compact models, its aging technology appears to have limited the EQB’s competitiveness in today’s rapidly advancing electric vehicle (EV) market. As a result, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the EQB will be discontinued after the 2025 model year.

According to a company spokesperson speaking to InsideEVs, the EQB “has reached the end of its planned lifecycle and therefore will not be offered in the U.S. or Canada after model year 2025.” The representative was quick to emphasize that this decision doesn’t signal any retreat from the company’s EV ambitions. In fact, Mercedes-Benz is doubling down on its electrification plans, preparing for what it describes as the largest product expansion in its history. During the IAA Mobility 2023 event, the automaker revealed that two new SUV models based on a next-generation architecture are on the way, likely serving as successors to the outgoing EQB.

Currently, the 2025 Mercedes EQB starts at $54,200 including destination charges. This price includes a 70.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack capable of DC fast charging at up to 100 kilowatts. Depending on the chosen configuration—front- or all-wheel drive, performance level, and wheel size—the EQB’s EPA-estimated range varies between 205 and 251 miles per charge. While these numbers remain competitive for a compact luxury SUV, they are quickly being overshadowed by newer EVs boasting longer ranges, faster charging, and more advanced software systems.

Mercedes first introduced the EQB in 2021 as an electric counterpart to its successful GLB-Class SUV. One of the model’s standout features was its ability to offer up to three rows of seating, a rarity among compact electric SUVs. However, with its production ending soon, the only remaining three-row electric SUV from Mercedes will be the much larger and more expensive EQS SUV, which offers a third row as an optional feature.

Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz plans to launch its upcoming SUVs on the brand-new MMA platform, engineered to support both hybrid and fully electric powertrains. The redesigned CLA-Class will be among the first models to showcase this new technology, featuring an advanced 800-volt electrical system for faster charging and a more sophisticated interior operating system developed entirely in-house. Although an official release date for the EQB’s successor has not yet been announced, the confirmation of its discontinuation suggests that Mercedes intends to introduce its replacement in the near future, signaling a new chapter in the brand’s electric SUV lineup.
