Tank SUV has officially announced that the 2026 Tank 400 plug-in hybrid model has started arriving at dealerships across China, with display vehicles now available in 178 cities nationwide. This refreshed version of the rugged SUV introduces a handful of important updates, including some exterior refinements, a brand-new body colour called “Dunhuang Purple,” and the addition of a roof-mounted lidar unit. The lidar works alongside Great Wall Motor’s third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra advanced driver assistance suite, bringing more cutting-edge technology into the Tank lineup. Furthermore, the updated range now includes a Hi4-Z powertrain option, offering customers more choices in terms of performance and electrification.

From the outside, the 2026 Tank 400 keeps its signature tough, mechanical design language, though several details have been reworked to sharpen its presence. The redesigned front bumper now incorporates black mesh accents that add a more aggressive feel, while the rear sees the removal of the external spare tire guard, resulting in a cleaner appearance. The badge arrangement has also been updated, with the “GWM” logo prominently displayed at the centre. The SUV measures 4,964 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,905 mm in height, riding on a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. Compared to the outgoing version, the new Tank 400 is slightly more compact overall—shorter by 21 mm—yet 10 mm wider and 5 mm taller, giving it a sturdier stance.

Inside, the cabin continues with the design philosophy of the current model but benefits from updated technology. A 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster sits behind the steering wheel, paired with a large 16.2-inch floating centre touchscreen that controls the latest generation of GWM’s infotainment software. The gear selector has been reconfigured into a column-mounted design, replacing the previous setup. Practical and comfort-oriented features include wireless smartphone charging, a head-up display, a digital rearview mirror, a sizable 15.6-inch ceiling-mounted rear entertainment screen, and even an integrated refrigerator for added convenience during long journeys.

One of the most notable upgrades is the integration of the lidar system, positioned on the roof. Working with side and rear cameras, it powers the Coffee Pilot Ultra platform. This system supports advanced functions such as navigation on autopilot (NOA) in both city traffic and highway conditions. To visually communicate its operation, the SUV’s taillights glow with blue indicator lights whenever the system is engaged, making its semi-autonomous capabilities more transparent to bystanders and drivers alike.

On the powertrain side, the Tank 400 now provides two distinct plug-in hybrid options. The Hi4-Z version combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, rated at 185 kW and 380 Nm, with two electric motors producing 215 kW and 240 kW respectively. This setup works with a 59.05 kWh ternary lithium battery, delivering an impressive 200 km of all-electric driving range under CLTC standards. The second option, the Hi4-T system, uses the same 2.0T engine paired with a single 120 kW electric motor and a smaller 37.1 kWh battery pack. It offers a pure electric range of 105 km while achieving a combined fuel consumption of 8.4 litres per 100 km, making it a more balanced choice for drivers prioritizing efficiency.
