Meet the Versatile 2025 Volkswagen Tayron

Volkswagen is set to introduce its new-generation large family SUV, the 2025 Tayron, to Australian showrooms in September. This all-new model replaces the Tiguan Allspace and builds on the recently updated five-seat Tiguan, adding more interior space and versatility. Buyers will be able to choose between four trim levels and either a five- or seven-seat configuration. While hybrid options won’t be available at launch, Volkswagen will offer a range of turbocharged petrol engines, delivering performance up to 195kW.

In terms of design and platform, the Tayron mirrors the Tiguan's latest tech and mechanical underpinnings but stretches the dimensions to accommodate more passengers and cargo. It measures 4770mm in length, 1852mm in width, and 1660mm in height, riding on a 2791mm wheelbase—the same as the Tiguan Allspace, but with more overhang for added storage capacity. Compared to the five-seat Tiguan, the Tayron is approximately 230mm longer overall and has an additional 114mm between the axles, offering more interior room for families.

While pricing details have yet to be confirmed, it’s expected that the Tayron will cost more than the standard Tiguan, which starts at $44,990 (plus on-road costs). The outgoing Tiguan Allspace was priced between $43,990 and $60,590, so the Tayron will likely slot above that range given its enhanced size, performance, and features.

The base Tayron model, the 110TSI Life, comes in a five-seat configuration and offers 885 litres of cargo space behind the second row—more than the 850 litres available in the seven-seat versions. It’s powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 110kW and 250Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and front-wheel drive. This is an upgrade from the outgoing six-speed auto, even though engine output remains unchanged.

The 150TSI variants gain a 2.0-litre turbo engine pushing out 150kW and 320Nm, with all-wheel drive as standard. At the top of the range, the 195TSI R-Line uses a tuned version of the same engine to deliver 195kW and 400Nm, significantly more than the 132kW and 162kW outputs of the equivalent Allspace models.

Standard tech and features in the Tayron are a step up from its predecessor, including a 12.9-inch infotainment screen, 10.25-inch digital instrument display, LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, 360-degree camera, keyless entry/start, and a power tailgate. Higher trims introduce adaptive suspension, larger 19- or 20-inch wheels, matrix LED headlights, ventilated and heated front seats, leather upholstery, and a 15-inch touchscreen.

The 2025 Volkswagen Tayron is expected to be marketed as a 2026 model year vehicle, continuing the brand’s strategy of offering modern, tech-laden family SUVs with strong performance credentials and premium options.
