Leapmotor Unveils D19: China’s New Luxury Electric SUV

Leapmotor, the rapidly growing Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer partly owned by Stellantis, is continuing to broaden its portfolio by moving into new and competitive segments of the EV market. Following the recent unveiling of the B05 — also known as the Lafa 5 — at last month’s Munich Motor Show, the company has now revealed its latest and most ambitious model yet: the D19. This large, premium SUV will serve as Leapmotor’s flagship offering when it arrives in China during the first half of 2026. Designed to combine cutting-edge technology with luxury and practicality, the D19 aims to deliver a high-end driving experience while maintaining an accessible price point to attract a wide range of customers.

Positioned above the brand’s existing lineup — which includes the T03, B01, B10, C01, C10, C11, and C16 — the D19 will sit proudly at the top of Leapmotor’s domestic range. Interestingly, spy photos suggest that the company is also developing a flagship minivan that could share the same underlying platform as the D19, hinting at an expansion into the luxury MPV market as well.

In terms of design, the D19 adopts a clean and modern aesthetic, though some might call it somewhat conventional. Its styling closely resembles that of other full-size electric SUVs currently dominating the Chinese market, including the Li Auto L9, Dongfeng Yipai 008, Chery Fulwin T11, GAC Trumpchi S9, Zeekr 9X, Nio Onvo L90, and Geely Galaxy M9. However, in this segment, understated styling often works in favor of the vehicle, as most buyers prioritize interior space, comfort, and a sense of understated sophistication rather than dramatic exterior flair. Leapmotor has nonetheless added a touch of individuality with distinctive split headlight clusters and a sleek, full-width LED taillight bar. Measuring approximately 5.2 meters long with a 3.1-meter wheelbase, the D19 is roughly on par with European giants like the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS.

Although the interior has not yet been revealed, expectations are high. The D19 is anticipated to feature a highly digital cockpit, complete with a dedicated passenger display, premium materials, and smart ambient lighting. Under the hood, it will utilize dual Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 processors — one powering the infotainment system and the other managing the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). A particularly unusual feature is its built-in oxygen generator, capable of producing up to eight liters of oxygen per minute, designed to maintain clean and breathable air in heavy traffic or at high altitudes — a novelty that’s both futuristic and slightly satirical about modern urban air quality.

Powertrain options will include both a fully electric and a range-extender variant. The pure electric model delivers an impressive 724 horsepower and houses a massive 115 kWh battery, good for up to 720 kilometers of range under China’s CLTC cycle. The range-extended hybrid version will pair dual electric motors with a small combustion engine, producing a combined 536 horsepower and offering up to 500 kilometers of EV-only range — an excellent figure that could translate to an even greater total range when refueled.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the D19 is its pricing. Leapmotor has announced that the SUV will start between $35,000 and $42,000, making it an extraordinary value proposition. Considering the size, performance, and technology it offers, that price point would be considered a steal in Western markets — reinforcing Leapmotor’s growing reputation for delivering high-end innovation at attainable prices.
