JAC T9 Enters Australian Pickup Truck Arena

The Australian car market is getting a shakeup with the arrival of JAC Motors, a Chinese automaker joining the fight for a piece of the lucrative midsize pickup truck segment. This segment is dominated by established players like Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux, but JAC is hoping to carve out its own niche with the all-new JAC T9.

The rise of Chinese automakers in Australia has been remarkable. Just over ten years ago, they were practically nonexistent. Now, with JAC joining MG and LDV, Chinese brands are a major force, especially in the popular SUV and ute categories.

JAC T9

The JAC T9, known as the Hunter in China, isn't entirely new. It debuted in 2021 and received a refresh in 2023. The first thing that strikes you is its bold exterior. The massive grille, split LED headlights framed by rugged plastic cladding, and prominent JAC emblems exude a sense of power and command.

Move inside, and you'll find a surprisingly modern cabin. A large touchscreen takes center stage, complemented by a sleek 7-inch digital instrument cluster. Comfort and convenience are well catered to with features like leather upholstery, wireless charging, heated seats, and a 360-degree camera system. Safety isn't forgotten either, with the T9 boasting a selection of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).

Under the hood, the JAC T9 shares its platform with the T6 and T8 trucks from JAC. The Australian version packs a punch with a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine churning out 168 horsepower and a substantial 410 Nm of torque. Power is delivered to all four wheels via a smooth-shifting eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. To handle tough terrain, the T9 is equipped with a BorgWarner low-range transfer case and an electronically locking rear differential.

JAC isn't stopping at just a diesel version. They're looking towards the future with a fully electric T9 in the pipeline, potentially arriving later in 2024. A concept unveiled in 2023 hinted at exciting features like a covered grille and unique wheels. Whispers suggest the electric T9 will boast dual electric motors and a substantial 88 kWh battery pack, offering a compelling alternative to traditional fuel.

LTS Auto, with its network of over 40 dealers across Australia, will be responsible for importing and distributing the JAC T9. The company's global chairman, Xiang Xingchu, has ambitious goals, aiming to sell 10,000 vehicles in the first year and reaching a staggering 40-50,000 units annually once they expand their model lineup.

Adding to the T9's appeal is the comprehensive seven-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty offered on both the base Oasis trim (starting at AU$42,662) and the top-of-the-line Haven (starting at AU$45,630, excluding on-road costs). This competitive pricing makes the JAC T9 a serious contender in the midsize pickup segment, offering a unique blend of value, features, and future-proof technology.
