Mazda introduces the CX-80, its latest flagship SUV catering to markets like Europe, Japan, and Australia. This unveiling marks a significant addition to Mazda's lineup, offering a blend of performance, versatility, and advanced technology.

Design and Platform

The CX-80 inherits design cues from the CX-60, with shared body panels and a familiar front end. However, notable differences include a longer wheelbase and extended rear overhang, resembling larger models like the CX-70 and CX-90 available in North America. Measuring nearly 5,000 mm in length with a wheelbase exceeding 3,000 mm, the CX-80 surpasses the dimensions of its predecessor, the CX-60.

Powertrain

European variants of the CX-80 feature a range of powertrains, including mild-hybrid diesel and plug-in hybrid options. The entry-level e-Skyactiv D variant boasts a 3.3-liter six-cylinder diesel engine coupled with Mazda's M Hybrid Boost 48V mild-hybrid system. Meanwhile, the e-Skyactiv PHEV variant offers enhanced efficiency and performance, combining a gasoline engine, electric motor, and a sizable battery pack for electric-only driving capabilities.

The entry-level e-Skyactiv D variant features a 3.3-liter six-cylinder diesel engine producing 251 hp and 550 Nm of torque. This engine benefits from Mazda's M Hybrid Boost 48V mild-hybrid system, enhancing its eco-friendly credentials. Power is efficiently transmitted to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

For increased performance and efficiency, the e-Skyactiv PHEV variant delivers a combined output of 323 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds, this setup comprises a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, an electric motor, and a 17.8 kWh battery pack offering an electric-only range of up to 60 km.

Interior and Technology

The CX-80 offers flexible three-row seating configurations, accommodating either six or seven occupants. Notable interior features include a premium dashboard design carried over from the CX-60, advanced infotainment system with Alexa voice control, and a comprehensive suite of i-Activsense ADAS safety technologies. Additionally, Mazda introduces innovative features like the "hybrid navigation" system and Trailer Hitch View for enhanced convenience and functionality.

Equipped with premium materials and Mazda's latest infotainment display, the dashboard mirrors that of the CX-60. Noteworthy features include Alexa voice control, a "hybrid navigation" system blending offline and online services, and a new Trailer Hitch View system. Safety is prioritized with the full i-Activsense ADAS suite, aiming for a five-star Euro NCAP rating.

Arrival and Availability

Anticipated to commence presales in May, the Mazda CX-80 is set to arrive at European dealerships by Autumn 2024. With plans for availability in Japan and Australia later in the year, Mazda aims to expand its global footprint with its latest flagship SUV offering a blend of performance, versatility, and advanced technology.
