Infiniti was among the first automakers to popularize the crossover coupe segment when it launched the FX back in 2003. The FX was an instant hit, combining SUV practicality with sporty, coupe-like styling, and it helped define a new vehicle category that many competitors would later follow. However, over time, the model’s appeal began to wane, and the FX’s successor, the QX70, was eventually discontinued in 2017. Infiniti later attempted to revive consumer interest with the QX55, but the model struggled to gain traction. Sales were disappointing, with only 3,721 units sold last year, indicating that the automaker had yet to recapture the magic of the FX.
Despite this setback, Infiniti is pressing forward, unveiling the QX65 Monograph, a concept vehicle that previews an upcoming production model. The design clearly draws inspiration from the FX, reintroducing a sense of style, drama, and athleticism that has been largely absent from Infiniti’s recent lineup.
At the front, the QX65 Monograph is dominated by a wide, expressive grille featuring angular accents inspired by bamboo forests, paired with an illuminated Infiniti emblem and slender digital piano key lights. The headlights are positioned lower on the fascia, stacked above vertical air curtains, while a sporty front bumper with large air intakes completes the aggressive yet sophisticated front-end treatment. Moving along the sides, the vehicle displays Infiniti’s signature Artistry in Motion design language, characterized by soft curves, flowing surfaces, and a rakish windshield. The gently sloping roofline and greenhouse evoke the FX’s familiar silhouette, while a contrasting black roof and gloss black cladding add a contemporary edge. 22-inch two-tone wheels complement the dark accents, reinforcing the concept’s sporty stance.
A subtle bronze “spear” runs along the dynamic roofline, visually separating the roof from the body and accentuating the crossover’s fastback profile. The vehicle’s exterior is finished in a striking Twilight paint color, which Infiniti says “mimics the red and gold hues of the moment when twilight fades into night.” At the rear, the QX65 Monograph features an angular window flanked by a spoiler, a three-dimensional light bar with vertical extensions inspired by jet aircraft tailfins, and a sporty bumper with diffuser-like detailing.
Infiniti styling director Alfonso Albaisa commented on the concept’s design, saying, “It’s sculpted with an underlying sense of speed and elegance, blended with very muscular and strong proportions – all headlined by the expectation-defying fastback roof silhouette.” The key question now is how much of this dramatic styling will carry over to the production QX65. Early spy shots suggest that while minor tweaks may occur, the final model will closely resemble the concept.
Mechanically, the QX65 is expected to share much of its underpinnings with the QX60, essentially serving as a two-row version of that SUV. Power will likely come from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 268 hp and 387 Nm of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and an optional all-wheel-drive system. With its bold design and familiar, practical mechanics, the QX65 could be Infiniti’s latest attempt to reinvigorate interest in sporty luxury crossovers.
