GWM Ora 5 SUV Unveiled

GWM’s Ora electric-car brand has officially unveiled its very first SUV, the Ora 5, a compact-to-mid-size electric vehicle positioned to compete directly with rivals like the BYD Atto 3 and MG S5 EV. This new model is designed for global markets, with Europe and Australia highly likely to be part of its rollout strategy.

Ora 5>

The Ora 5 had already surfaced earlier this month through filings with Chinese government regulators, offering the first preview of what GWM had in store. Unlike earlier Ora products that carried whimsical “cat” names such as Funky Cat, Lightning Cat, and Ballet Cat, this new SUV takes a more universal approach. The brand has decided to use a straightforward alphanumeric naming system that is easier to recognize internationally, removes the need for translation, and avoids cultural barriers.

In Australia, specific launch plans remain unconfirmed, though GWM executives have hinted strongly at a 2026 introduction. Earlier this year, GWM Australia’s COO, John Kett, stated that the “first evolution” of the Ora brand expansion in Australia would appear in the first quarter of next year. Similarly, GWM Australia’s head of marketing, Steve Maciver, suggested that the company sees several electric vehicle market segments in which Ora could expand. Currently, the GWM Ora hatchback is available in Australia but lags behind the BYD Dolphin and MG 4 in sales, despite offering a lower price point. The Ora 5 is intended to refresh the lineup and better position the brand in international markets.

<img class=

Styling-wise, the Ora 5 retains the playful, rounded look seen on the hatchback but scales it up into an SUV profile. Circular headlights, integrated LED tail-lights, and a compact yet modern design characterize its exterior. Measuring 4471mm long, 1883mm tall, and 1641mm wide with a 2720mm wheelbase, it matches competitors like the MG S5 EV and BYD Atto 3 while being slightly larger than Kia’s upcoming EV3. GWM even highlights its design proportions, claiming they align with the Fibonacci curve, and notes that its axle ratio is close to that of the Porsche Macan. Customers in China will have access to wheel sizes up to 18 inches and can even opt for a roof-mounted lidar sensor.

Inside, the Ora 5’s cabin feels more advanced than the current Ora hatch. It features a freestanding central touchscreen running GWM’s latest “Coffee” software, incorporating climate control functions into the display. A row of toggle switches sits beneath for essentials like defrost, fan settings, and hazard lights. The interior also includes a two-spoke steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster around 10 inches, wireless charging, ambient lighting, a panoramic glass roof, and a floating centre console with extra storage.

Mechanically, confirmed details are limited, but reports indicate a 150kW front-mounted electric motor paired with a lithium iron phosphate battery pack. If it mirrors the setup of the Ora Lightning Cat sedan, battery options could include a 63.9kWh pack offering around 555km of range or an 83.5kWh unit capable of up to 705km (both figures based on China’s CLTC testing cycle).

More information on the Ora 5 – including detailed specifications and pricing – is expected to be released in the months leading up to its Chinese launch, with international market announcements likely to follow soon after.
