Caterham has re-released its classic Sevens series, this time taking inspiration from the marque's vehicles from the 1970s and 1980s. The 2022 Super Seven 600 and 2000 are trimmed and designed to resemble the Sevens that were in vogue in the years following Caterham's 1973 acquisition of the rights to the renowned sports vehicle from Lotus.
Under the skin, the two cars actually differ from one another. The Super Seven 600's 660 cc turbocharged Suzuki triple generates 83 horsepower and propels the lightweight two-seater to 97 km/h in 6.9 seconds. A conventional live rear axle drives the back wheels.
A 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated Ford Duratec with 178 horsepower and a more sophisticated de-Dion rear end replaces the Suzuki engine in the Super Seven 2000, which costs more. Customers of the more powerful vehicle can also choose to configure their vehicles with Caterham's roomier chassis structure for a little bit more comfort, or they can order them with a sport chassis pack that includes a rear anti-roll bar, adjustable suspension, and more potent brakes.
The shift from the compact cycle fenders that come standard on all modern Caterhams to the fixed, flowing kind of fenders that were popular in the 1970s and 1980s is the most noticeable visual departure from the ordinary Seven series. Both vehicles come equipped with a chrome filler cap, a black leather Mota-Lita steering wheel, a carpeted back panel, polished exhaust, and not-very-1970s LED rear lights. However, the Super Seven 600 has silver Juno rims, and the 2000 has Classic wheels.
Both vehicles come in four more colors that have never been offered on a Seven in addition to a few fairly standard colors. Similar classic interior accents, such as carpets, the dashboard, leather seats, and shift gaiters, can be used to complement those paint schemes. These accents can be chosen in hues like Deep Red, Burgundy, and Biscuit Beige.
The Super Seven 600 costs £29,990 in the UK, and entering the 2000 will cost you an another $10,000.
