Peugeot Unveils the E-208 GTi at Le Mans

Peugeot is taking the lead in the race to launch an all-electric hot hatch, outpacing Volkswagen by bringing its performance-oriented EV to market ahead of the long-anticipated electric GTI from Germany. While Volkswagen has teased enthusiasts with a concept model introduced in 2023 and has been talking about a production version ever since, Peugeot is already making moves with the E-208 GTi. True to tradition, the French automaker continues to spell GTi with a lowercase “i,” but the performance spirit that defined the nameplate in the combustion era is fully alive in this new electric version.

The E-208 GTi represents a major milestone as Peugeot Sport’s first fully electric vehicle, following the performance hybrid 508 that debuted a few years ago. Like its predecessors, the new model is front-wheel-drive, in keeping with the classic hot hatch layout. Under the hood—or more accurately, under the floor and body—lies an upgraded electric motor that produces a lively 280 horsepower and 345 Nm of torque. That output mirrors the specs of the Abarth 600e, and it marks a huge increase of 124 horsepower and 85 Nm compared to the standard E-208. With this boost, the E-208 GTi accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds and can reach a top speed of 180 km/h.

Of course, added performance comes with some compromises. The WLTP-rated electric driving range has dropped from 433 km to 350 km, reflecting the car’s priority on speed over long-distance efficiency. Nevertheless, the E-208 GTi retains the standard 54-kWh battery pack and supports fast charging, going from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes using a 100 kW DC charger.

Peugeot didn’t stop at just giving the E-208 GTi more power. The model features lowered sports suspension, reducing the ride height by 30 mm, along with widened front and rear tracks—56 mm and 25 mm respectively—for improved stability and a sportier presence. Bold 18-inch alloy wheels, inspired by the classic 208 GTi, complement the aggressive stance. A vivid red paint finish pays tribute to the iconic 205 GTi, while aerodynamic enhancements like a front splitter and a rear diffuser with a center LED fog light complete the exterior makeover.

On the performance front, the car is equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, a built-in self-locking differential, a revised rear anti-roll bar, and 355-mm front brake discs with four-piston calipers. For drivers seeking a purer experience, all driver assistance systems can be deactivated with the press of the Sport mode button.

Inside the cabin, the E-208 GTi features sporty details that echo its heritage. The front seats are redesigned with integrated headrests, and design cues nod to the 205 GTi 1.9 and 1.6 with a red center stripe and unique seat patterns. Finishing touches include Alcantara trim, custom GTi floor mats, and a red GTi badge on the steering wheel.

Peugeot unveiled the E-208 GTi during the 24 Hours of Le Mans weekend, setting the stage for what could be a broader lineup of electric GTi models in the future. While this isn't the first EV hot hatch—the Abarth 500e, Cupra Born VZ, Mini John Cooper Works Electric, Alpine A290, and MG4 XPower have already entered the space—it marks a bold step for Peugeot. Meanwhile, car enthusiasts still await the long-promised electric GTI from Volkswagen.
