Buick’s Obsidian Package Brings Bold New Style to the Regal Sedan

Buick may have abandoned traditional sedans in North America years ago in favor of its increasingly popular SUV lineup, but halfway across the world, the classic four-door sedan continues to thrive. In China, the Buick Regal—a nameplate long gone from American showrooms since 2020—remains a key part of the brand’s lineup. While the model’s Opel and Holden counterparts have been consigned to history, the Chinese-market Regal has not only survived but continues to evolve. Its latest update comes in the form of a striking new Obsidian Black Racing Package, a special appearance option clearly inspired by Buick’s iconic 1980s performance cars, particularly the Regal Grand National and the legendary GNX.

This new styling package transforms the Regal’s appearance with a dark, aggressive personality. The Obsidian Black exterior paint gives the sedan a stealthy and performance-oriented presence, while the black grille contrasts sharply with the red GS badge, giving the front end a bold, sporty identity. Complementing this look are black alloy wheels and a subtle rear spoiler, also finished in black, which together add to the car’s muscular stance. The visual homage to the Grand National is unmistakable—Buick’s designers have tapped into nostalgia while keeping the look contemporary and elegant.

Inside, the Obsidian Black Racing Package introduces a surprising burst of color. Instead of continuing the dark theme of the exterior, Buick has chosen to brighten the cabin with rich red leather upholstery. The tone is more of a deep wine red than a flashy bright red, giving it a premium and sophisticated character. The door panels feature an intricate honeycomb-patterned leather design accented with French double stitching, while the dashboard remains wrapped in black leather for contrast. To enhance the atmosphere, wing-shaped ambient lighting runs subtly along the carpeted floor, adding a modern and upscale touch to an otherwise conservative interior design.

Under the hood, however, everything remains unchanged. Despite its aggressive looks, the Regal Obsidian Black Racing Package doesn’t come with any performance upgrades. The base engine, known as the 25T, humorously translated as the “25T Super Enjoyable Edition,” features a 1.5-liter GM Ecotec inline-four producing 166 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. For those wanting a bit more power, there’s the 28T version, powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four that delivers 233 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. Both engines are paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and drive the front wheels. While not performance cars by any means, these engines provide enough power for daily driving, with the Black Package focusing purely on aesthetics rather than speed.

In terms of pricing, Buick has positioned the Obsidian Black Racing Package as an affordable upgrade. The package is officially priced at around $1,110, though a limited-time discount reduces that cost by approximately $421. The base Regal starts at roughly $15,000, with higher trims reaching upwards of $28,000, depending on configuration. For Chinese buyers looking for a bit of retro flair and sporty sophistication, the Obsidian Black Racing Package offers a stylish nod to Buick’s legendary past—without the high price or high performance of its American muscle ancestors.
