BMW Unveils Canada-Exclusive 540i Legacy Edition

Author: |

BMW has introduced a new iteration of the 5-Series, though it’s not the high-performance M variant that enthusiasts might initially hope for. Instead, this fresh release is a special edition version of the 540i xDrive, known as the Legacy Edition, and it’s exclusive to the Canadian market. With only 151 units planned for production, this limited-run sedan is designed to cater to collectors and BMW fans who value rarity and performance without stepping into full M territory. Those interested in owning one should act quickly, as demand is expected to outpace availability.

What sets the Legacy Edition apart from other models in the 5-Series lineup is its engine configuration. It is notably the first model of the current 5-Series generation to be offered in Canada with a six-cylinder engine and without any plug-in hybrid components. This is an appealing option for driving purists who prefer traditional combustion powertrains over hybrid or electric systems. Buyers who wish to make their Legacy Edition even more distinctive can select from a range of BMW Individual Manufaktur paint colors at no additional charge, giving the car a bespoke flair.

One of the standout finishes is Maldives Black II Metallic, a nostalgic color reminiscent of the classic E34-generation 5-Series—the first to carry the 540i badge. That model was notable for introducing a V8 engine into the 5-Series family and was even available with a six-speed manual transmission, making it a landmark in BMW’s performance sedan history. While the new Legacy Edition doesn't feature a V8, its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine delivers 375 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque, bolstered by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The result is impressive acceleration, with a 0–100 km/h time of just 4.7 seconds, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

To enhance the driving experience and aesthetics, all Legacy Editions come with the M Sport Pro Package as standard, as well as 21-inch Individual alloy wheels. Buyers can further personalize the car with a choice of red or blue M Sport brake calipers. Inside, the vehicle offers luxury and comfort with ventilated front seats and an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system.

Previously, the only six-cylinder option in the 5-Series lineup in Canada was the 550e plug-in hybrid, making the Legacy Edition a welcome alternative for those seeking performance without electrification. While BMW has not revealed official pricing yet, early estimates suggest a starting price of over CA$100,000. Orders are now being accepted, with deliveries expected in the fourth quarter of this year.
