Alpine Unleashes Its First SUV: A390

Alpine is experiencing a remarkable surge in success. Marking its fourth consecutive year of record sales in 2024, the brand has benefited from the debut of its first fully electric model—the A290 hot hatchback. Now, as Alpine broadens its lineup, it enters a new segment with the introduction of the A390. While many would label this a crossover or SUV, Alpine opts for a sleeker term: “sport fastback.” Despite the branding, the vehicle bears the hallmark coupe-like sloped roofline that has become a defining trait of sportier utility vehicles.

The production-ready A390 was first previewed last year through the A390_β concept. Built on the AmpR Medium platform—shared with Renault’s Megane E-Tech and Scenic E-Tech, as well as Nissan’s Ariya—the A390 is designed to be the most dynamic and engaging vehicle based on this architecture. Impressively, it boasts more power than even the performance-oriented Nissan Ariya Nismo.

Visually, the A390 distinguishes itself from its siblings with an aggressive, performance-driven design. Like the Megane E-Tech, Alpine conceals the rear door handles within the C-pillars to create a coupe-like silhouette. Standard 20-inch wheels give the vehicle a bold stance, though optional 21-inch wheels are available for those willing to compromise some range for aesthetics. Michelin has crafted custom summer and all-season tires exclusively for the A390, further enhancing its sporting credentials.

Alpine has gone to great lengths to make its new fastback look and feel unique. Triangular LED clusters in the front bumper, a thin headlight design inspired by the concept car, and rear bumper details that mirror the triangular motif add flair. A streamlined light bar at the back incorporates an illuminated logo, and a subtle spoiler enhances the rear design. French national identity is proudly displayed with a flag motif on the rear pillars, signaling that production will take place at Alpine’s Dieppe factory in northern France.

In terms of dimensions, the A390 is the largest and most practical Alpine vehicle to date. It measures 4,615 mm in length, 1,885 mm in width, and 1,532 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,708 mm. Even its lightest version weighs 2,121 kg—about double the mass of the lightweight A110 R sports car. Despite this, the A390 maintains an optimal 49:51 front-to-rear weight distribution and offers a cargo space of 532 liters with the rear seats in place.

Inside, the A390’s cabin design reflects its Renault heritage, particularly with its dual-screen layout: a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster paired with a 12-inch vertical infotainment touchscreen. Alpine has retained physical controls for essential functions below the main screen, similar to those in the Megane and Scenic. Though Alpine is not positioned as a luxury brand, the higher trims of the A390 will feature upscale options such as heated, massaging, and electrically adjustable front seats. A 13-speaker audio system and a 360-degree camera system are also on offer. The infotainment system runs on Android Automotive and includes a telemetry app for performance tracking.

Under the hood—or rather, under the floor—are serious performance capabilities. Both the A390 GT and GTS are equipped with three electric motors: one up front and two in the rear. The standard GT variant delivers 396 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. The GTS cranks it up to 463 hp and 808 Nm, cutting the sprint time to a blistering 3.9 seconds and pushing the top speed to 220 km/h.

Both versions are powered by an 89-kWh battery exclusive to Alpine, developed in partnership with French battery firm Verkor. It supports fast DC charging up to 190 kW, achieving a 15–80% charge in just 25 minutes. Range is rated at 555 km on the WLTP cycle with 20-inch wheels, and 520 km with the 21-inch set. A heat pump is standard, and the battery’s advanced chemistry allows it to sustain high charging speeds longer. It also supports bidirectional charging up to 22 kW, making it capable of powering external devices or feeding energy back into the grid.

With the A390, Alpine is redefining what a sporty electric SUV can be—offering performance, practicality, and cutting-edge tech all in one striking package.
