Volkswagen Recalls 311 ID.4 EVs Over Fire Risk

Volkswagen has announced two urgent recalls, both involving serious safety risks that owners need to address immediately. The first and most critical recall affects the ID.4 electric SUV, where a battery defect has created a potential fire hazard. The second recall concerns certain 2026 model-year vehicles, including the ID.4, Atlas, and Atlas Cross Sport, which may have improperly installed wheel bolts that could lead to wheels detaching while driving.

Focusing first on the ID.4, Volkswagen is recalling 311 units from the 2023 and 2024 model years. The issue stems from misaligned battery cell modules, specifically shifted electrodes, which can trigger a thermal event or fire. Due to the severity of the problem, Volkswagen is advising owners to park their vehicles outdoors immediately after charging and to avoid charging indoors overnight until the recall repairs are completed. Additional precautions include avoiding the use of DC fast chargers and limiting battery charging to 80% capacity.

The recall traces back to several incidents. Early last year, an ID.4 experienced a thermal event while fast charging in Illinois, prompting Volkswagen to investigate the battery by sending it to their labs for analysis. By July 2024, another ID.4 caught fire while parked and not connected to a charger, followed by yet another incident later that year. Despite multiple fires, Volkswagen and battery supplier SK Battery America were initially unable to pinpoint a common cause due to the differing nature of each incident. A breakthrough came when an ID.4 in Colorado caught fire while using a DC fast charger. Examination revealed shifted electrodes within the battery cell modules, which matched findings from CT scans of previous battery fires. This quality deviation by SK Battery America prompted Volkswagen to initiate a recall for all 311 affected vehicles, with plans to replace the defective battery modules. Owner notifications are scheduled to begin on January 30, though owners are encouraged to proactively check if their vehicle is affected.

The second recall concerns 27 vehicles from the 2026 model year, including the ID.4, Atlas, and Atlas Cross Sport. In these vehicles, incorrect wheel bolts may have been installed during assembly, creating a risk that wheels could detach while driving. Due to the extreme danger, Volkswagen has issued a strict “do not drive” warning. Owners are instructed to contact their authorized dealer immediately to have their vehicle transported for inspection and repair and to arrange alternate transportation in the meantime.

The issue was discovered when a Volkswagen assembly line worker in Chattanooga noticed a misinstalled wheel bolt on Halloween, prompting an immediate halt to production so that all vehicles could be inspected. Investigations revealed that a parts-mixing error by a supplier was responsible for the incorrect bolts entering assembly. Roughly 40% of the affected vehicles are believed to have the wrong bolts, predominantly Atlas crossovers. Dealers will inspect all impacted vehicles and replace wheel bolts as needed to ensure safety.
