Smart is continuing to broaden its horizons, pushing beyond its familiar lineup of compact runabouts and more recent electric crossovers. The company is now preparing to enter yet another segment with a model that represents a notable shift in direction: its first fastback-style sedan. Known as the Smart #6, this new addition marks a departure from prevailing industry patterns. Instead of debuting as a pure battery-electric vehicle—as many would expect from Smart—it arrives as a plug-in hybrid, signaling a more flexible approach to electrification. The model came to light through regulatory documents released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), revealing several stylistic choices that echo current trends in the Chinese market, including similarities to the Xiaomi SU7.
The front design features a clean and modern expression, with headlamps neatly integrated into the bumper area and linked by a slim, full-width LED light bar—an increasingly common design element across newer vehicles. The hood has been sculpted with gentle contours, and beneath it sits a compact lower grille trimmed in black. Both versions seen in the MIIT images include a large panoramic glass roof, adding a sense of openness and premium appeal to the cabin.
Moving to the rear, the #6 adopts a true fastback profile, replacing a traditional sedan trunk lid with a wide hatchback opening for improved practicality. A retractable rear spoiler is incorporated into the design, hinting at a balance between functionality and sport-minded styling. Although initial photos might make the car appear modest in size, the #6 is actually quite substantial. Its footprint places it close to the newest W214 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. For comparison, the E-Class stretches 4,949 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, and 1,468 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,961 mm. The Smart #6 comes very close: it measures 4,906 mm in length, but is noticeably wider at 1,922 mm and slightly taller at 1,508 mm, riding on a 2,926 mm wheelbase. These dimensions clearly position it in the large-sedan category.
Mechanically, Smart has confirmed that the #6 EHD variant will use the same plug-in hybrid system found in the recently introduced #5 EHD SUV. This setup pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine delivering 161 horsepower with a front-mounted electric motor producing 268 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque. While Smart hasn’t yet disclosed the battery capacities for the #6, they are expected to match the #5’s offerings: a 20 kWh pack and a larger 41.46 kWh option. In the SUV, those allow for electric-only travel between 120 km and 252 km, with combined driving ranges reaching 1,483 km and 1,615 km. Thanks to the #6’s more aerodynamic shape, its electric and total range figures could see slight improvements.
As for the interior, Smart has not released any official photos. However, if the #6 follows the design direction established by the #5, buyers can likely expect a modern cabin featuring a wide digital instrument display, a head-up projection system, and two dashboard screens—one handling infotainment functions and another dedicated to the front passenger.
