Nissan is raising the stakes in the fiercely competitive mid-size pickup segment with the debut of the 2026 Frontier PRO-4X R, a rugged off-road variant developed in partnership with Roush Performance. Best known for its work on Ford vehicles, Roush brings its engineering expertise to the Frontier for the very first time, resulting in a truck that blends Nissan’s proven durability with Roush’s performance-oriented upgrades. Positioned as a more affordable alternative to the Ford Ranger Raptor, Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, and Jeep Gladiator, the PRO-4X R offers buyers a fresh mix of capability, style, and value.

In terms of pricing, the Frontier PRO-4X R comes in at $47,960. This figure represents a $6,090 premium over the standard PRO-4X trim, but it also positions the Roush-modified truck strategically below some of its fiercest competitors. For example, it is priced $8,110 less than the Ford Ranger Raptor, while also undercutting the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and the Jeep Gladiator. Nissan is clearly aiming to provide a more budget-friendly alternative without sacrificing capability.
Visually and structurally, the PRO-4X R distinguishes itself through a series of Roush-inspired upgrades. The front end benefits from a titanium skid plate, titanium grille inserts, and titanium badging, all of which emphasize durability and a premium look. Bright Lava Red tow hooks add both utility and style, while Roush-branded fender badges serve as a reminder of its unique pedigree. Perhaps the most eye-catching upgrade is the set of 17-inch titanium-finish wheels, which are paired with Hankook Dynapro AT2 Xtreme all-terrain tires. These wheels also feature black lug nuts and distinct “R” logo center caps, helping the truck stand out even further.
Inside the cabin, changes are more subtle. The seats feature embroidered “R” logos on the headrests, offering a small but noticeable nod to the truck’s special edition status. Beyond that, the Frontier PRO-4X R retains its modern tech features, including a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display, ensuring that drivers have access to both convenience and connectivity on the road.
The highlight of this collaboration is unquestionably the Roush Performance x Öhlins 2.0 Off-Road Suspension System. This new setup introduces a 2-inch lift, which improves ground clearance and overall off-road performance. It includes upgraded upper control arms, coilover shocks with external reservoirs, and lightweight aluminum damper bodies. According to Roush, this suspension dramatically enhances damping control, as well as approach and departure angles, making the truck more capable in demanding off-road environments.
One area where the Frontier PRO-4X R falls short compared to rivals is under the hood. The 3.8-liter V6 engine remains unchanged, producing 310 horsepower and 381 Nm of torque. While respectable, this output pales against the Ranger Raptor’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6, which delivers 405 horsepower and 582 Nm of torque. This means that while the Nissan impresses with affordability, suspension upgrades, and off-road design, it lacks the sheer performance advantage that Ford’s Raptor continues to boast.
