Rivian Unleashes 1,025-HP Quad-Motor R1T and R1S

Rivian has expanded its electric vehicle lineup by introducing the high-performance quad-motor versions of its second-generation R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck. First revealed last summer, these upgraded models come with a significant boost in power and new features tailored for both on-road speed and off-road capability. The new quad-motor R1T starts at $115,990, while the R1S begins at $121,990, positioning them firmly in the premium EV segment.

These vehicles are engineered for exceptional performance, featuring four electric motors that collectively generate an impressive 1,025 horsepower and 1,622 Newton-meters of torque. Thanks to this immense power, the R1T can accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h in just 2.5 seconds, with the R1S trailing slightly at 2.6 seconds. Although Rivian hasn't disclosed full specifications, the company claims an EPA-estimated range of up to 602 kilometers. In “Conserve” mode—which deactivates the rear drive unit to maximize efficiency—the range increases to 644 kilometers. However, according to Rivian’s own online configurator, real-world range estimates are slightly lower: 544 km for the R1T and 579 km for the R1S Launch Editions.

Underpinning these performance figures are Rivian's newly developed drive units, which the company designed and built internally. Each axle is powered by a dual-motor setup. The rear drive unit is focused on high torque and aggressive performance, while the front drive unit is fine-tuned for better efficiency during highway cruising. The motors are oil-cooled, which enhances their ability to handle extreme heat—particularly useful during low-speed, high-torque conditions like rock crawling. This also contributes to overall energy efficiency during longer drives at higher speeds.

Visually, the quad-motor variants retain the same design as previous generations, but with some refined details. The interior receives a premium touch with Rivian’s Ascend package, which includes quilted leather seats, extended stitching, upgraded door panels, and materials like Brown Ash, Walnut, or Driftwood. The cabin also features bronze accents, plaid patterns, and enhanced fabrics, especially on the seat backs.

On the exterior, Rivian offers a new selection of 20- and 22-inch wheels, complemented by Laguna Beach Blue brake calipers. Customers can also opt for Satin Graphite wheels in Dark or Dune shades, wrapped in rugged 34-inch all-terrain tires. Other features include a full glass roof, standard Darkout Package, underbody protection, and even an integrated air compressor. A fun and quirky touch is the rear Gear Guard mascot, designed with “wind-swept hair” to hint at the vehicle’s performance pedigree.

Technology-wise, the quad-motor R1s include several innovative features. One standout is Launch Mode, paired with a Launch Cam that records performance runs and plays back real-time stats via the in-car video app. Rivian also teased the upcoming RAD Tuner, set to launch in September, which allows users to fine-tune their driving experience using adjustable sliders to create or modify drive modes. These settings can be saved or customized based on pre-set profiles like Sport or Rally. Additionally, a Kick Turn feature coming this fall will make tight off-road maneuvers easier by intelligently adjusting torque to the wheels for tighter turns.

Another major update is the inclusion of a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, available as standard in the 2026 models. This enables seamless access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. To ensure compatibility, Rivian will also include a CCS adapter with all quad-motor models.

To commemorate the release of these powerful new variants, Rivian has unveiled a special Launch Edition. This version features an exclusive Launch Green exterior, unique dashboard badging, a second-generation key fob, a Camp Speaker, and lifetime access to both the Connect+ service and Rivian’s Autonomy Platform+. The Launch Edition R1T is priced at $119,990, while the R1S comes in at $125,990. Canadian customers can expect to pay $196,990 CAD and $207,990 CAD respectively. Deliveries for the Launch Edition are expected to begin within the next few weeks, with initial availability targeted for late July.
