Genesis Pauses GV70 EV Production

Less than two weeks after it was revealed that Genesis had discontinued the Electrified G80 sedan from its U.S. lineup, another piece of unsettling news has surfaced regarding the brand’s electric future. Production of the all-electric GV70 SUV has now been paused, sparking speculation about whether the model has a secure place in Genesis’ long-term plans. While the company insists that the suspension is only temporary, the timing has inevitably raised doubts about the strength and clarity of Genesis’ EV strategy in the American market.

The information first emerged in a report by Business Korea, which stated that Hyundai Motor’s plant in Alabama—the facility responsible for building the Electrified GV70—halted production back in June. More concerningly, the outlet suggested that this might not simply be a short pause but potentially the permanent removal of the electric SUV from the assembly line. This is particularly notable because the Electrified GV70 is the only Genesis EV built in the United States, with production having started in February 2023.

Despite its status as a U.S.-produced electric luxury SUV, sales figures have fallen well below expectations. Between January and July of this year, only 1,367 units were assembled, representing a decline of 18.3 percent compared with the same period in 2023. March proved to be especially weak, with production tallying just 93 vehicles in that entire month. These numbers underscore the challenge Genesis faces in convincing American buyers to embrace its EV offerings.

In response to the reports, Genesis has confirmed that production has indeed been paused at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) facility. However, the company was quick to emphasize that the halt is temporary and part of a broader effort to “optimize production plans.” A Genesis spokesperson assured Carscoops that the Electrified GV70 will resume production for the U.S. market, though the timeline for this restart remains unspecified. In the meantime, Genesis emphasized that the model is still available for purchase at U.S. dealerships, with no current supply disruption for customers. Alongside the GV60, the brand says its electric lineup will continue to serve the needs of American consumers.

Although Genesis maintains that the GV70 is not being abandoned, the sluggish sales and uncertain production schedule highlight the challenges facing the model. Still, recent updates suggest the brand is not ready to give up on it just yet. Toward the end of November, Genesis rolled out a refresh for the 2026 model year, introducing a larger 84 kWh battery pack, which replaces the previous 77.4 kWh unit. This upgrade should deliver more driving range, a crucial factor in attracting buyers who remain hesitant about EV practicality.

Ultimately, while Genesis is attempting to reassure both dealers and customers, the pause in production sends mixed signals. The Electrified GV70 could still have a future as part of the brand’s EV lineup, but until sales gain momentum, its role remains under close scrutiny.
