China’s rapid evolution in the automotive industry is nothing short of impressive. Once primarily associated with inexpensive and simple vehicles, Chinese carmakers are now making a name for themselves in the premium market, delivering models that rival established global brands. One of the latest examples is the Trumpchi S9, an upscale SUV from GAC, one of China’s largest automotive companies. The Trumpchi S9 appears positioned as an affordable alternative to luxury SUVs like the Range Rover, blending influences from European designs with enough refinement to stand confidently on its own.
Unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show, the Trumpchi S9 boasts a sleek and sophisticated exterior that could easily be mistaken for a European model. At the front, it features a stylish light bar linking sharp, slim LED headlights, complemented by a bold black lower grille and large, aggressive air intakes. Enhancing its luxury appearance are flush-mounted door handles and the option for two-tone paint schemes. A delicate chrome strip runs along the base of the windows, visually separating the upper and lower portions of the body and reinforcing the S9’s polished aesthetic. Around the back, the design remains cohesive with striking LED taillights, a full-width light bar, and a substantial tailgate. According to specifications, the S9 measures 5,060 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width, and 1,760 mm in height, supported by a spacious 2,930 mm wheelbase — dimensions that place it comfortably among large premium SUVs.
Stepping inside, the S9’s cabin blends inspiration from models like the Hyundai Palisade with the clean, high-tech interiors now typical of Chinese luxury vehicles. It sports a minimalist two-spoke steering wheel, a fully digital instrument panel, and a large infotainment screen taking center stage on the dashboard. Practical features include twin wireless charging pads, dual cupholders, and a split design for the center console. The SUV is configured as a six-seater, with second-row captain’s chairs that can be electrically adjusted for extra comfort. Unique touches include a fold-down screen from the ceiling, tray tables, and a smaller touchscreen for controlling climate and media settings, giving rear passengers a truly upscale experience.
Under the hood, the Trumpchi S9 will be offered solely as a plug-in hybrid. Every model is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 160 horsepower. The entry-level version pairs this engine with a 231-hp electric motor, creating an all-wheel-drive setup with a combined output of 392 horsepower. Higher-end variants will boost total system output to an impressive 501 horsepower, ensuring strong performance to match the SUV’s luxurious design.
