Ford has issued another recall for its popular Maverick pickup truck. This time, the recall affects 144,000 vehicles from the 2022 to 2024 model years and is centered around a potential issue with the rear camera system.
The specific problem lies in the software that controls the rear camera image. Under certain circumstances, the image could freeze during reverse, significantly compromising the driver's visibility and potentially leading to accidents. This defect is believed to be linked to a memory leak in the Connected Touch Radios installed in these Mavericks.
Ford discovered the issue in June 2024 after conducting stress tests on the system. The automaker identified a software vulnerability that could cause the image processing path to fail, resulting in a frozen display. Additionally, four other vulnerabilities were found that could lead to the image not appearing or being delayed.
The defective software was used in the production of Mavericks from February 3, 2021, to November 28, 2023. Ford has confirmed that newer versions of the software, currently used in production, are not affected by this issue.
While Ford has not reported any injuries related to the rear camera glitch, it has received four warranty claims, 22 complaints, and two reported accidents. The automaker will address the problem by providing a software update that will need to be installed by a dealer. Ford expects to begin notifying owners about the recall on September 30.
This is not the first time the Maverick has been recalled in recent months. Earlier this year, Ford recalled certain Mavericks due to a potential issue that could cause the vehicles to shift into neutral on their own. The ongoing recalls highlight the importance of keeping up with safety updates and addressing potential defects promptly.
