2022 Nissan X-Trail Comes To The U.S With A Three-Cylinder Engine

In the United States, the new-generation Nissan X-Trail will have a new turbo three-cylinder engine for Model Year 2022. The new 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine produces 201 horsepower and 305 Nm of torque. For comparison, the current 2.5-liter non-turbo petrol four-cylinder engine produces 181 horsepower and 245 Nm of torque.

The new engine incorporates Nissan's ground-breaking VC-Turbo technology, which allows the engine's compression ratio to be varied. In brief, depending on the driving circumstances, the carmaker may combine the performance benefits of a low compression ratio (8.0:1) with the economic benefits of a high compression ratio (14.0:1).

Nissan claims combined fuel consumption of 7.1 liters per 100 kilometers when paired with an upgraded CVT transmission, compared to 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers for the previous 2.5-liter four-cylinder.

It's worth mentioning that the new engine might also be seen in the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander, which shares the X-base. Trail's

A Nissan Australia spokeswoman couldn't say which of the two available engines will be available in Australia.

While the engine will be available in US dealerships in the coming months, there is no word on whether it will be available in Australia when the new X-Trail comes in showrooms in 2022.
