Zeekr Brings Bulletproof 001 to Brazil

Electric vehicles (EVs) are advancing rapidly across the globe, and Brazil is no exception. However, in Brazil, the shift towards EVs is influenced not only by sustainability and environmental awareness but also by unique socio-economic challenges—particularly security concerns. The country has a high rate of carjackings and street crime, which has led to an unusual automotive trend: an overwhelming demand for armored vehicles. In fact, Brazil now holds the title for the world’s largest civilian fleet of bulletproof cars. Major automakers, including Toyota, even offer factory-armored versions of popular models like the Corolla and Hilux to cater to this niche market.

Amid this landscape, a Chinese electric car manufacturer is entering the Brazilian market with a strategy that addresses both innovation and safety. Zeekr, a rapidly growing EV brand under Geely, has made a strong impression in a short amount of time. Since its debut, the company has gained international recognition for producing high-performance electric vehicles with cutting-edge design and technology. Now, it’s turning heads in South America with a very special version of its 001 model.

The Zeekr 001 is the brand’s inaugural model—a sleek, high-performance electric shooting brake that combines luxury, range, and speed. It was refreshed in early 2024 with enhanced features and improved range. In its flagship FR configuration, the car is capable of blistering acceleration and impressive performance specs. But the version recently seen in Brazil is not making headlines for its power or aesthetics. Rather, it’s believed to be the first-ever armored Zeekr 001.

This blacked-out Zeekr 001 was spotted driving through Brazilian streets, looking fairly ordinary at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, it’s clear the vehicle has been significantly modified for protection. Its body panels have been reinforced, its windows are made from thick bulletproof glass, and its panoramic roof has also been reinforced for extra safety. Although it remains unclear which company handled the armoring process, the modifications suggest the car’s owner is someone who prioritizes—or requires—serious personal security.

Though we don’t have visual confirmation of the undercarriage, it’s assumed that it too has been upgraded to shield the battery pack from potential explosive threats underneath the vehicle. The Zeekr 001 rides on an advanced 800-volt platform and comes with either a 95 kWh LFP battery or a 100 kWh NMC battery. Powertrains range from a single 416 hp rear motor to dual-motor AWD setups, and the top-tier FR version boasts a staggering 1,248 horsepower and 1,280 Nm of torque, allowing it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.07 seconds. With this armored version, Zeekr has positioned itself at the intersection of luxury EV innovation and real-world security demands in one of the world’s most unique automotive markets.
