XPeng G6 Gets Performance Boost with New AWD Flagship

The updated 2026 XPeng G6 mid-size electric SUV is set to receive a notable performance upgrade when it arrives in Australian showrooms around the middle of next year. Headlining the refreshed range will be a new all-wheel-drive performance flagship, marking the first time this drivetrain configuration has been offered for the G6 locally. However, the update also brings a key change to the line-up, as the entry-level Standard Range variant will be dropped at launch. Despite increased competition from models such as the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, Zeekr 7X, and other Chinese electric SUVs, XPeng’s Australian distributor has ruled out a major price reduction for the facelifted G6. As a result, the cost of entry into the range is expected to rise by roughly $5000.

Although early reports suggested a late-2025 release, the refreshed G6 will instead be introduced approximately 18 months after the original model debuted in Australia at the end of 2024. Order books are scheduled to open toward the end of the first quarter of 2026, likely in March, with customer deliveries expected to begin between April and June. Jason Clarke, chief executive of XPeng’s Australian distributor TrueEV, has confirmed that the revised range will include an all-wheel-drive option for the first time, expanding the model’s appeal to buyers seeking stronger performance.

While the facelifted G6 retains the overall shape and character of the current model, Clarke notes that there are reportedly 88 individual changes. The exterior receives a more modern appearance thanks to a new full-width LED light bar at the front, a revised rear spoiler, and fresh alloy wheel designs. Additional visual updates include relocating the XPeng badge to the bonnet and refining the look of the 20-inch wheels. Inside the cabin, technology takes a step forward with a larger central touchscreen that grows from 14.9 inches to 15.6 inches. This display is now integrated into a redesigned dashboard, with the digital instrument cluster repositioned as a freestanding unit for a cleaner, more contemporary layout.

International specifications reveal that the new all-wheel-drive G6 uses a dual-motor setup, pairing a 140kW/220Nm motor at the front with a more powerful 218kW/440Nm unit at the rear. Combined output is claimed to reach 358kW, allowing the performance-focused variant to accelerate from zero to 100km/h in just 4.1 seconds. Power is supplied by an 80.8kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, which delivers a WLTP-rated driving range of 510km.

The same battery will also be used in the updated rear-wheel-drive Long Range version. However, because it is smaller than the outgoing model’s 87.5kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery, the official range figure drops from 570km to 525km. Despite a power increase to 218kW, acceleration slows slightly to 6.7 seconds for the 0–100km/h sprint. XPeng has received approval to sell the Long Range RWD and Performance AWD variants in Australia, while the Standard Range will not be offered initially. This decision pushes the starting price closer to the current Long Range figure of around $59,800 plus on-road costs, although pricing will be confirmed closer to launch.
