Mercedes-Benz has discreetly launched the new S 680 Guard 4MATIC. The vehicle, which is aimed at corporate executives, celebrities, and heads of state, is an armored luxury car that combines passenger comfort with maximum output.

The stately sedan, known as the Mercedes-Benz S680 Guard 4Matic and offered with a long wheelbase, has been developed to obtain VPAM VR10 certification. It provides the maximum level of ballistic protection for a civilian car, which means it can survive certain bullets and explosives.

Specifics are few at the moment, but the vehicle is said to have multi-layer glass and poly-carbonate windows that are around one centimeter thick. The vehicle also has a covered passenger compartment and run-flat tires, as escaping is the best way to survive an assault. The S Guard is reported to include a variety of features, including a fire extinguishing system and an emergency fresh air system. The latter, as the name implies, circulates fresh air into the cabin to protect people from smoke or gas.

Rather than incorporating protective elements into a standard S-Class, engineers redesigned the entire bodywork to provide more resistance than the preceding Guard.

Other differences from a regular S-Class include hydraulic windows, which will continue to function even if the onboard electronics fail as a result of an attack. Mercedes had to re-calibrate the transmission and steering to accommodate the additional weight required by the armoring.

The engine is a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 that allegedly generates 604 horsepower and 830 Nm of torque. It's most likely mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. In that regard, we've learned that the new Guard weighs in at a whopping 4.2 metric tons.
