Ram’s Diesel Power Wagon Changes the Game

Ram appears to be listening closely to what its loyal buyers have been asking for, and the results are starting to show in product decisions. After already building momentum with the return of the 5.7-litre Hemi V8, the brand is now taking another big step by introducing a diesel option for the 2027 Ram 2500 Power Wagon.

For many truck fans, this move feels overdue. In the heavy-duty pickup world, diesel power is often viewed as the natural match for serious towing and long-haul work, especially when buyers want strong torque and confidence under load. Until now, Ram buyers who wanted a Power Wagon had to accept the standard 6.4-litre Hemi V8, which produces 405 hp and 582 Nm of torque. That petrol V8 is still a solid engine for everyday use and off-road duty, but towing has always been a relative weak spot for the Power Wagon because of its off-road hardware and configuration. With the Hemi, Ram lists a maximum towing figure of 10,590 lb for the Power Wagon. That number is respectable, but it is far from what many heavy-duty shoppers expect from a truck in this class.

The new diesel-powered Power Wagon changes the conversation dramatically. Ram says the diesel version can tow nearly 20,000 lb, bringing it closer to the kind of hauling capability people associate with big-displacement turbodiesels. Under the hood is a well-known option in the Ram HD lineup: the 6.7-litre Cummins turbo-diesel inline-six, here rated at 430 hp and a massive 1,456 Nm of torque. Power is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission, and four-wheel drive is standard, as you’d expect from a Power Wagon built for rough terrain.

In the competitive set, the closest rival is described as the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 ZR2, and the two trucks sit in a similar performance neighborhood. Chevrolet’s diesel option is quoted at 470 hp, giving it an advantage on horsepower, though it trails the Cummins on twist with 1,320 Nm of torque. Also worth noting in this same competitive space is Ford’s heavy-duty alternative: the Ford F-250 Super Duty with the 6.7-litre Power Stroke V8 turbo-diesel, which is commonly offered in two factory outputs—475 hp and 1,423 Nm (standard output) or 500 hp and 1,627 Nm (high output)—making it one of the strongest torque contenders in the segment.

Aside from the new engine choice, the diesel Power Wagon remains very much the Power Wagon buyers recognize. It continues as a crew-cab pickup paired with a 6-foot-4-inch bed, and it wears the same tough styling and functional hardware. Highlights include black powder-coated bumpers, extended fender flares, and Satin Black 20-inch wheels fitted with 34-inch all-terrain tyres. Ram also adds a sport performance hood, bedside graphics, and prominent Cummins badges on the front fenders.

Where the Power Wagon really leans into its identity is underneath. The truck comes equipped with rock rails, skid plates, and solid axles, plus electronic-locking front and rear differentials. An off-road-tuned suspension with Bilstein shocks is standard, and Ram includes a class-exclusive electronic disconnecting sway bar to improve articulation when the pavement ends. Key capability figures include 12.6 inches of ground clearance, along with approach, departure, and breakover angles of 26.1 degrees, 26.0 degrees, and 20.6 degrees, respectively.

Inside, the standard setup is functional and truck-focused, featuring a heated cloth bench seat and a six-speaker audio system, along with an integrated trailer brake controller and a 12-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment display. Buyers who want a more premium feel can upgrade to leather bucket seats with both heating and ventilation, add a sunroof, and step up to a larger 14.5-inch infotainment screen. Other available conveniences include a dual wireless phone charging pad and upgraded sound systems with either nine or 17 speakers.
