Nissan has recently announced a recall affecting certain 2024 Nissan Altima models, shedding light on potential issues with the electronic power steering (EPS) unit. The recall centers on the revelation that one or more bolts securing the electronic power steering unit to the steering rack in 2024 Altima models might not have been tightened to the correct specifications during assembly. This oversight could lead to loosening of the bolts over time, particularly due to the vibrations generated when turning the steering wheel. Such loosening has the potential to impact the connection between the EPS unit and the steering rack.
The consequences of this issue are serious, as the steering gear could potentially lock up, resulting in drivers losing control of the steering. This significantly heightens the risk of a crash, making it imperative for affected drivers to take immediate action to rectify the fault.
The recall affects a specific batch of 2024 Nissan Altima models, encompassing those produced between September 26, 2023, and September 28, 2023. While Nissan assures owners that there have been no reported incidents so far, it emphasizes the importance of addressing the concern proactively.
Nissan became aware of the potential problem on November 8, 2023, following an incident involving another vehicle equipped with the same steering gear assembly supplied to Nissan. The issue was traced back to a flaw in the tool used to manufacture the steering gear assemblies. Subsequently, six Altima models, including one in Dubai that was halted at a port, were identified as impacted.
Owners of the five 2024 Altima models subject to the recall will receive notifications starting from February 9, 2024. Nissan dealerships will undertake the necessary repairs, replacing the steering gear assembly at no cost to the owners.
