MG has introduced the Windsor EV to the Indian market, but despite its branding under the Morris Garages (MG) name, this vehicle is not entirely new. It is, in fact, a rebadged version of China’s Baojun Cloud and Indonesia’s Wuling Cloud EV. While it carries the MG badge, which evokes the brand’s British heritage, its core design and technology remain very similar to its Chinese and Indonesian counterparts.
Visually, the MG Windsor EV closely resembles the Baojun Cloud, with only minor adjustments to give it a unique identity for the Indian market. The changes are subtle, including black trim elements added around the front bumper, above the full-width LED headlights, and along the short hood. These modifications aim to provide the vehicle with a bit of character that distinguishes it from its overseas variants. In addition, black cladding has been applied to the wheel arches and a protective strip has been added to the doors. Roof rails have also been installed to give the Windsor EV a more rugged crossover-like appearance, even though its dimensions are more in line with a compact minivan. The vehicle will be available in four color options: Starburst Black, Pearl White, Clay Beige, and Turquoise Green, with buyers having the choice of 17- or 18-inch wheels to further personalize the look.
The interior of the Windsor EV mirrors that of its Chinese sibling, maintaining a straightforward yet modern design. It features a large 15.6-inch infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, which provide a high-tech touch to the cabin. One of the key differences for the Indian market version is the inclusion of physical controls for the air conditioning system, which may appeal to customers who prefer tactile buttons over touch-sensitive controls. The vehicle is also built in a right-hand-drive configuration, adapted for Indian roads.
Comfort is a key aspect of the Windsor EV’s design, particularly with its “aero lounge seats” that are designed to feel like plush armchairs. The rear seatbacks can recline up to 135 degrees for added comfort. Higher trims offer additional features such as ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a premium 9-speaker audio system, ambient lighting, wireless charging, and a 360-degree camera. Standard safety features include six airbags and disc brakes, though advanced driver assistance systems are limited, with only basic features like Emergency Stop Signal, Hill-start Assist, and Hill Descent Control.
One of the most attractive aspects of the Windsor EV is its starting price of $11,895, which positions it as an affordable option for those seeking an electric vehicle. However, the battery is not included in the base price. Instead, MG offers a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, where customers can rent the battery and pay an additional $0.04 per kilometer driven. In return, buyers benefit from a lifetime warranty on the battery with unlimited mileage and free charging for the first year. For an average driver covering 10,000 kilometers per year, the annual cost would amount to roughly $420 under the BaaS plan.
The battery itself has a 38 kWh capacity, providing a range of up to 331 kilometers on a single charge. The vehicle supports a maximum charging rate of 45 kW, allowing it to charge from 0 to 80 percent in just 55 minutes. Powering the vehicle is a single electric motor that delivers 134 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque to the front wheels, ensuring decent performance for city driving.
The MG Windsor EV will be available for orders in India starting October 3, with deliveries expected to begin on October 12, offering a cost-effective electric vehicle solution for the market.
