MG is preparing a major update for its MG 4 electric hatchback, with the most significant changes focused on the cabin rather than the exterior. As part of a broader overhaul of the MG 4 lineup, the refreshed model is expected to arrive in Australian dealerships around the middle of next year. While the exterior design will remain largely untouched, the interior will undergo a comprehensive redesign aimed at modernising the driving experience and bringing the MG 4 in line with newer models in the brand’s expanding EV portfolio.
Early insight into these changes comes from images published on MG’s Brazilian website, where the flagship MG 4 XPower is shown with its familiar exterior styling. In fact, the promotional image used to represent the upcoming 2026 model was originally captured two years ago, underlining that no visible body updates are planned. The real transformation happens inside. The new cabin layout closely mirrors that of the MG S5 EV SUV, which shares the same Modular Scalable Platform architecture as the MG 4.
For the 2026 model year in Australia, MG plans to restructure the MG 4 range. Entry-level, front-wheel-drive versions equipped with 43kWh and 53kWh battery packs will be introduced as more affordable, city-focused electric vehicles. At the same time, the existing lineup will be simplified, with most variants consolidated around a single 64kWh battery option. This battery will be offered in both rear-wheel-drive form and the high-performance, all-wheel-drive XPower version.
Although MG has yet to officially confirm the full list of features and specifications for the Australian market, the left-hand-drive MG 4 XPower displayed in Brazil provides a clear preview of what buyers can expect. Drawing heavily from the MG S5, the revised MG 4 interior features an all-new dashboard layout, significantly larger digital displays, redesigned door trims, an updated centre console, and newly styled seats.
According to specifications listed on the MG Brazil website, the 2026 MG 4 will adopt a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a larger 12.8-inch central infotainment touchscreen. This marks a substantial upgrade over the current setup, which includes a smaller 7.0-inch driver display and a slim 10.25-inch infotainment screen. The control layout beneath the touchscreen has also been reworked, reintroducing more physical buttons for key climate functions such as temperature adjustment, fan speed, and airflow direction. A traditional volume knob and dedicated buttons for front and rear demisters are also included, mirroring the user-friendly layout found in the MG S5.
The centre console has been completely redesigned as well. Instead of the low-profile tray and floating wireless charging pad used in the current MG 4, the new version features a taller console. The wireless charger now sits alongside the gear selector, cup holders are positioned higher for easier access, and a pass-through storage space underneath adds practicality. Overall, the cabin now appears to feature more soft-touch materials and a smoother, more rounded design language compared with the sharper, more minimalist interior of the outgoing model. The steering wheel has also been subtly refreshed, retaining familiar button functions but introducing a new spoke and rim design.
In Brazil, the MG 4 XPower is shown with both black and beige interior color options, whereas Australian models are currently offered exclusively with black trim across all grades. Despite differences in platform and interior layout between the MG 4 and the front-wheel-drive MG 4 FWD models sold elsewhere, these updates help align the visual identity of MG’s electric range more closely.
MG has been approached for confirmation regarding the rollout of these interior updates in Australia. While an official response is still pending, it is widely understood that the revised interior will form part of the broader MG 4 update scheduled for the second quarter of next year. Markets that use right-hand-drive configurations, such as the UK, Indonesia, and Thailand, continue to display the existing interior for now, making Brazil one of the first regions to showcase the refreshed cabin design.
