Meet the Onvo L90: Nio’s 590hp Electric SUV

Nio’s new mass-market brand, Onvo, is stepping further into the electric SUV market with the introduction of its latest model, the L90. This three-row electric SUV marks the brand’s second vehicle, following the debut of the L60 in 2024, which was designed to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y. The L90, however, sets its sights higher, offering a package that draws comparisons to popular models like the Kia EV9 and the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 9 — but with the promise of even greater performance.

Details released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology show that the L90 is a sizable vehicle, measuring 5,145 mm in length, 1,998 mm in width, and 1,766 mm in height, with a generous 3,110 mm wheelbase. In terms of design, it borrows some elements from its smaller sibling, the L60, yet there are clear influences from Genesis vehicles as well. Observers have noted that while the L90 maintains a clean and straightforward front-end appearance, featuring no traditional grille save for a small one at the bottom of the bumper, its split LED headlights bear a striking resemblance to those seen on Genesis models. That said, Onvo has added a subtle curve to the headlight design, giving the L90 a distinctive touch.

The exterior shown so far features a refined, understated gold finish complemented by silver wheels and silver trim around the side windows, lending the SUV a sophisticated look. Like the L60, the L90 is equipped with slim LED taillights, maintaining a sleek and modern rear design. Although interior images have not been released yet, expectations are high that the L90’s cabin will mirror the current trend in high-end EVs, with expansive digital displays and premium materials throughout.

In terms of powertrain options, the L90 will reportedly be available with either nickel manganese cobalt or lithium-iron phosphate battery packs. Exact driving range figures and charging speeds have not been confirmed, but the L90 will support Nio’s hallmark battery swapping technology. This feature allows drivers to quickly exchange a depleted battery for a fully charged one, reducing dependence on traditional fast-charging infrastructure.

Performance-wise, the L90 is quite impressive. It will come standard with dual electric motors — a 134-horsepower motor at the front and a 456-horsepower motor at the rear, combining to deliver a total output of 590 horsepower. This places it ahead of competitors like the Hyundai Ioniq 9 Performance, which produces 429 horsepower, and even the high-performance Kia EV9 GT, which offers 501 horsepower. With such strong specs, the Onvo L90 positions itself as a serious contender in the electric SUV market.
