Maserati GranCabrio Folgore Convertible Will Have Insane Power

Maserati has unveiled its latest offering in the form of a convertible, and it stands out as one of the rare electric drop-top options currently available. Named the GranCabrio Folgore, it serves as the open-air counterpart to the existing GranTurismo Folgore, sharing a drivetrain and many other features with its sibling.

The fundamentals of the GranCabrio Folgore are undeniably appealing, even though they are shared with the GranTurismo. The heart of its drivetrain comprises three radial-flux permanent-magnet motors, each equipped with its own silicon carbide inverter. While two motors are situated at the rear, one is positioned at the front, collectively capable of delivering up to 300 kilowatts of power each, theoretically culminating in a peak output of 1,207 hp. However, the battery is unable to sustain such power levels, with Maserati citing a peak output of 818 hp in "MaxBoost" mode and 751 hp in standard operation.

The battery pack, positioned in a T-shaped configuration between and behind the passengers, maintains the GranCabrio's iconic proportions, which would have been compromised by a bulky floor-mounted battery. With a capacity of 92.5 kWh, only 83 kWh is utilized, suggesting Maserati's strategy to optimize the longevity of the pack by restricting the maximum charge voltage. Impressively, the pack can absorb up to 400 kW of regenerative braking power momentarily and can be charged at a rate of 270 kW from capable stations, replenishing 20 to 80 percent of its capacity in just 18 minutes. Maserati anticipates potential challenges with charging stations compatible with the car's 800-volt architecture and has incorporated an onboard "DC Booster" to adapt lower voltage from older stations to charge the Folgore's pack, albeit at a reduced rate of 50 kW.

Similar to GMC's Hummer EV, the GranCabrio Folgore features paddle shifters to adjust regenerative braking levels and a system to advise drivers on when to engage regen or coast for optimal range utilization, boasting a range of 278 miles on the European WLTP cycle. Complemented by a sophisticated suspension setup comprising double wishbones in the front and multi link suspension at the rear, the GranCabrio Folgore offers a luxurious driving experience, complete with up to 16 speakers in the sound system, neck-level seat heaters, and a meticulously crafted interior befitting its premium price point. However, specific pricing and availability details are yet to be disclosed by Maserati.
