Mercedes introduces its latest innovation, an electric variant of the revered G-class, marking a significant shift in the brand's approach to naming conventions. Named the G580 with EQ Technology, it diverges from the anticipated EQG badge, setting a precedent for future Mercedes EVs.

Powering the G-EV is a four-motor electric drivetrain, generating a robust 579 hp, with each motor contributing 145 hp, collectively delivering 1,164 Nm of torque. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, its formidable off-road performance takes precedence over raw speed, surpassing its traditional ICE-powered counterpart in challenging terrains.

Equipped with a unique drivetrain configuration, each motor is paired with its own two-speed gearbox, complemented by a shiftable low-ratio transmission. Unlike conventional differential locks, the G580's individual motor control ensures optimal traction, enabling it to conquer a 35-degree slope and wade through 850 mm of water, surpassing the ICE-powered G-class.

Enhancing its off-road prowess are innovative features such as the G-Turn, facilitating a tank-like turn, G-Steering for a tighter turning circle, and a crawl mode for navigating rugged terrains at a leisurely pace. Despite subtle exterior updates like a smoother grille and a redesigned hood, the G580 EQ retains the classic G-class aesthetic, riding on the same sturdy body-on-frame chassis.

The integration of a 116 kWh battery pack, borrowed from the EQS sedan, as a structural chassis component, eliminates the need for additional cross-bracing and is safeguarded by carbon shields. Capable of handling 200 kW charge speeds, the G580 offers an estimated EV range of 292 WLTP miles (470 kW), commendable considering its imposing curb weight of 3,085 kg.
