Don’t Park Your Jeep Cherokee Inside Your Garage

Certain Cherokees from the 2014–2016 model years are being recalled by Jeep. Whether the car is on or off, these vehicles could create an electrical short that raises the possibility of a fire starting.

The impacted automobiles have a motorized liftgate module installed in a place where water penetration was a possibility. This could result in an electrical short that might result in a vehicle fire. This can happen whether the ignition is on or off in the car. The 2015 recall, which attempted to solve the problem, was affected by this recall, according to the NHTSA.

The modules are made by Flextronics International Ltd. in Farmington Hills, Michigan, but the NHTSA has not been given any information about what exactly caused the shortage.

As the number of cargo compartment fires in Cherokee crossovers from the model years 2014–2015 grew, the carmaker started looking into the issue in January 2022. While visiting with engineers to learn about the motorized liftgate module and changes made to its design during manufacturing, it examined fire patterns, witness accounts, and vehicle histories.

On April 27, 2023, it located 50 reports that might be relevant to the problem. Stellantis made the decision to carry out a voluntary safety recall a few weeks later, on May 4. It is not aware of any incidents involving accidents or injuries.

Jeep is currently working on a fix, and by the end of June, it will start alerting owners and providing them with repair instructions. The business has already informed dealers of the recall and is asking owners to keep these cars away from other vehicles and from parking them close to them until the last repair has been made. Vehicle fires can spread swiftly to nearby vehicles and buildings.
