MG has revealed that interest in its latest model, the MG4, has been stronger than expected, with pre-sale reservations already surpassing 20,000 units. Due to this remarkable demand, the company has decided to move the official launch date forward. Originally planned for September, the debut will now take place on August 29.
The MG4 continues to adopt the hatchback form but introduces a refreshed design language overseen by Shao Jingfeng, who serves as both Chief Designer at SAIC Motor and General Manager of the UK Tech Centre. At the front, the car displays an illuminated brand logo, a styling detail also seen on the MG Cyberster, giving the vehicle a more modern and recognizable appearance. In terms of dimensions, the MG4 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, while its wheelbase stands at 2,750 mm. At the rear, the vehicle is equipped with arrow-shaped taillights inspired by the Union Jack, emphasizing its blend of British heritage with contemporary styling. Buyers will also be able to choose from six exterior colour options.
Inside, the MG4 features a wraparound cabin design intended to maximize both comfort and driver engagement. At the heart of the interior sits an infotainment system jointly developed by SAIC and Oppo. This system enables seamless smartphone connectivity, making it possible for drivers to control mobile content directly through the central display. Enhancing practicality, the MG4 incorporates SAIC’s CTB (Cell-to-Body) battery integration, which lowers the cabin floor to create a more spacious interior environment.
In terms of performance, the car is powered by a front-mounted 120 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor paired with a lithium iron phosphate battery pack. An advanced version, known as the MG4 Anxin Edition, will be equipped with semi-solid-state batteries, with full specifications expected to be announced at the official launch. Deliveries of this edition are scheduled before the end of the year. Other MG4 variants support rapid charging, allowing the battery to go from 30% to 80% in around 20 minutes when using maximum charging capabilities. On the efficiency front, the model achieves a CLTC-rated driving range of up to 530 km and consumes just 10.4 kWh of energy per 100 km.
Separately, MG has also collaborated with smartphone manufacturer Vivo. The company confirmed that its OriginOS “digital car key” is now compatible with MG vehicles, starting with the MG4. This technology allows users to unlock and start their vehicle by simply tapping an eligible smartphone against the car. Supported devices include models from Vivo’s X, S, and iQOO lineups. Vivo’s system already works with numerous automakers, such as Tesla, BMW, BYD, Nio, and Zeekr.
To further stimulate excitement, MG launched a limited “Pioneer Program” on August 15, offering 500 MG4 units for early reservation. Remarkably, all available slots were claimed in just 4 minutes and 36 seconds via the “MG Live” app, with buyers securing their place by placing a small deposit. General pre-sales officially began on August 5, with the MG4 priced between $10,300 and $14,700, making it a competitively positioned electric hatchback in today’s rapidly expanding EV market.
