After a long wait spanning over a decade, Toyota has at last unveiled the fifth-generation 4Runner for the 2025 model year. This highly anticipated SUV is primed to succeed the outgoing model that has been a mainstay since the Bush administration. The 2025 4Runner bids adieu to the aging V6 engine, ushering in two new four-cylinder powertrains. The standard offering comprises a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, boasting an impressive 278 horsepower and a remarkable 378 pound-feet of torque. This marks an augmentation of 8 horsepower and a substantial 100 pound-feet of torque compared to its predecessor. All 2WD models feature a limited-slip differential, while 4WD models are equipped with the same LSD along with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case featuring high- and low-range gearing, complemented by Toyota's Active Traction Control (A-Trac). The Trailhunter, borrowed from the Tacoma lineup, is engineered to be the most robust and capable off-road variant. Outfitted with 33-inch off-road tires, the 4Runner Trailhunter elevates its ride height by 2.0 inches in the front and 1.5 inches in the rear. It also features 2.5-inch Old Man Emu forged shocks with remote reservoirs from ARB, an ARB-designed roof rack, a high-mounted air intake for the I-Force Max powertrain (standard on the Trailhunter), a 20-inch light bar, and steel skid plates. These rugged upgrades are complemented by visual cues such as the Toyota heritage grille featuring a bronze "TOYOTA" wordmark.
Constructed on Toyota's TNGA-F platform, shared with the new Tacoma, Tundra, Land Cruiser, and Lexus GX, the 2025 4Runner has undergone dimensional growth compared to its predecessor. Now measuring 4,950 mm in length, 1,976 mm in width, and boasting a wheelbase of 2,844 mm, the new 4Runner is 119 mm longer, 51 mm wider, and has a 61 mm longer wheelbase than its outgoing counterpart, resulting in expanded cabin space.
