2025 Audi A5 & S5 Arrive with Striking Tech & Power

Audi is set to introduce a significant update to its mid-sized vehicle lineup in Australia this year with the arrival of the 2025 Audi A5. This new model is particularly noteworthy as it marks the debut of Audi's innovative new platform designed for its petrol-powered vehicles. In a strategic move to simplify its offerings, the 2025 A5 will effectively consolidate and replace both the current A4 and A5 series. This consolidation results in a more focused range for the mid-sized passenger car segment, which will initially be available predominantly as a sedan featuring a practical liftback tailgate.

Consumers will have a choice between two primary model grades. As part of this restructuring, Audi has officially discontinued the A4 model line, with the new-generation A5 stepping in to fill its role. In terms of physical dimensions, the forthcoming A5 has been engineered to be longer and wider than the model it succeeds, while also seeing a marginal increase in its overall height, promising a more substantial road presence and potentially more interior space.

The entry point into the 2025 Audi A5 family will be the standard A5 model, which is priced from $79,900 before accounting for on-road costs. This variant is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, delivering a capable 201 hp of power. It's important for Australian buyers to note that this entry-level A5 will be offered exclusively in the sedan body style. Regrettably for some, a wagon option will no longer be part of the standard A5 range in the Australian market. Furthermore, reflecting a broader global strategy for this new generation, Audi has also ceased production of the convertible and coupe versions of the A5.

For enthusiasts seeking enhanced performance, the S5 model will be the main draw. The S5 caters to a wider range of preferences by being available in both the sedan and the Avant (wagon) body styles. Beyond a significantly more potent engine, the S5 distinguishes itself with a host of premium features. These include a high-fidelity 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system for an immersive audio experience, comforting massage seats, a visually striking quad exhaust pipe setup, distinctive S-specific badging, and elegant silver exterior and interior accents. Under the bonnet, both the S5 sedan and S5 Avant boast impressive outputs of 362hp and 550Nm, thanks to a robust 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol V6 engine. Both the standard A5 and the performance-oriented S5 will share a smooth and responsive seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. However, a key differentiator for the S5 is its inclusion of Audi's new 48-volt mild-hybrid 'plus' system. This advanced technology allows the S5 to drive on electric power alone for very short distances at low speeds, contributing to efficiency and refinement.

To mark its launch, Audi is offering an introductory special, the S5 'edition one', with pricing starting at $99,990. These 'edition one' specials are available for both the S5 sedan and S5 Avant. While they don't introduce any direct performance enhancements, they are characterized by exclusive black exterior trims and unique bespoke details both inside and out. Audi describes these 'edition one' vehicles as being tailored for "purists." This philosophy is reflected in some equipment substitutions, such as the inclusion of 19-inch wheels, and interestingly, the removal of features like the premium Bang & Olufsen sound system and steering wheel heating, potentially to offer a more focused driving experience or a specific aesthetic. Externally, the 2025 Audi S5 'edition one' is easily identifiable by its comprehensive black styling package, which includes anthracite badging, dark chrome-plated exhaust tips, and black door handles.

Following the 'edition one', the pricing structure ascends to $114,900 for the standard S5 sedan. The pinnacle of the range will be the S5 Avant, priced at $117,900. In terms of in-car technology, both the new A5 and S5 models will mirror the advancements recently showcased in the new Audi Q6 e-tron electric SUV. This translates to a cutting-edge digital cockpit experience, highlighted by what Audi calls the 'Digital Stage'. This setup comprises a vibrant 11.9-inch digital instrument display for the driver and an impressively large 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, both integrated into a sleek, curved panel.
