BMW is preparing a major evolution for its legendary 3-Series lineup as it transitions into the Neue Klasse era — a new phase that will also introduce the next-generation i3 sedan. However, before ushering in this electrified future, BMW Canada is paying homage to the model’s remarkable half-century legacy with the 50 Jahre Edition, a highly exclusive version of the M340i xDrive designed to celebrate fifty years of the 3-Series’ enduring success.
This limited-run model honors the rich history of the 3-Series with a carefully selected range of paint colors, each representing a distinct era of the car’s development over five decades. The color palette features six unique shades: Madeira Red Metallic, Laguna Green Metallic, Avus Blue Metallic, Carbon Black Metallic, Deep Green Metallic, and Citrin Black Metallic. Every finish originates from BMW’s prestigious Individual catalog and reflects a specific generation of the 3-Series, from the pioneering E21 of the late 1970s to the current G20 platform.
While the exterior colors provide a nostalgic nod to the past, BMW has chosen to keep the rest of the design pure and performance-focused. The 50 Jahre Edition comes standard with the aggressive M Sport body kit and a distinctive set of 20-inch forged alloy wheels featuring a bold Y-spoke design. Special “50 Jahre Edition” badging decorates the tailgate, distinguishing it from regular M340i models, while the M Performance exhaust system enhances the sound profile of the turbocharged straight-six engine, delivering a deeper and more engaging tone.
Inside, the cabin reflects BMW’s signature blend of luxury and craftsmanship. The interior is upholstered in premium Merino leather from the BMW Individual range, available in elegant black or clean white. Subtle commemorative touches include a brushed metal plaque engraved with “3-Series 50 Jahre Edition” located on the cupholder cover, as well as matching door-sill plates that greet occupants as they step inside.
Mechanically, the car remains unchanged, retaining the powertrain that makes the M340i one of the most exhilarating sedans in its class. Under the hood lies a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine that produces 386 horsepower and 540 Nm of torque. This power is distributed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The result is blistering performance, with a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of just 4.3 seconds, keeping it the fastest 3-Series below the full-fledged M3.
Production of the BMW M340i xDrive 50 Jahre Edition begins this month at BMW’s facilities in Germany. Exclusivity is key — only 100 units will be made available for the Canadian market, making this commemorative model a collector’s item that bridges the heritage of BMW’s iconic 3-Series with the innovations of its electrified future.
